Government hopes to extend controversial drug war

Nearly 13,700 arrests so far in this year's government crackdown on drugs.
Thousands more drug arrests
5 October 2017
About 5,000 people have been arrested for drug use and trafficking since July in the second phase of an ongoing controversial drug crackdown, bringing the total number of arrestees this year to almost 13,700 people.
According to the Interior Ministry, 13,691 people were arrested in 6,205 cases over the past nine months – more than 7,200 of them suspected traffickers, and almost 6,500 alleged users. More than 8,000 people were arrested in the first half of the year.
The Anti-Drug Department also confiscated 68 cars, 1,624 motorbikes, 16 guns and more than 153kg of drugs, including methamphetamine, heroin, ketamine, cocaine and marijuana.

Drug cases mount in courts as crackdown continues
Since the crackdown on drug trafficking was started by the Ministry of Interior in January, cases have been piling up in the courts and the prisons have been packed with suspects.
Seu Vanny, a deputy prosecutor at Phnom Penh Municipal Court, said the large amount of drug suspects arrested has created an overload of work for judges and prosecutors. Ms Vanny said court officials have been working on holidays and every weekend in an attempt to clear the backlog of cases.
“Among the prisoners who were sent to the court for questioning or trial, offences involving drug use and trafficking were the highest number. “These are marked as first class crimes,” she told Khmer Times. “Offences involving theft are marked second class.”
Kong Sophal, a police officer at Prey Sar prison, said there were now about 7,000 inmates at the facility.
He said more than 90 percent of them were jailed for drug offences, while the other 10 percent were in for crimes ranging from murder, theft, fraud, human trafficking, procurement and other crimes...

Re: Gov't crackdown on drugs to begin 1 Jan 2017.
Kandal province - At 22:15 on 8 November 2017, at Chrey Thom Village, Sampov Poun Commune, Koh Thom District, Kandal Province, three minor suspects were arrested when Koh Thom anti-drug police suspected that drug trafficking was taking place in Chrey Thom Village.
At the time of their arrest, the three boys, aged 16 and 17, were found in possession of two small packets of methamphetamine, one mobile phone and 20,000 riel. As it turns out, one of the minors had brought the drugs from outside the village to sell to the other two.
All three suspects were arrested, and the dealer is likely to be charged with drug trafficking.
