Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Arrested with 70kgs of 'bushmeat', or protected species of animals for sale, a restaurant owner got a slap on the wrist after promising not to do it again. Meanwhile, the forestry officials confiscated the meat in order to 'destroy' it. There were no reports of a huge barbecue in Stung Treng last night.

Restaurant Owner Nabbed for Selling Bush Meat.

A restaurant owner in Stung Treng province was arrested yesterday after military police raided her establishment and seized about 70 kilograms of bush meat.

Provincial military police officer Major Keo Sophea said that Kuch Kanha, the 27-year-old owner of the restaurant in Stung Treng town, was arrested yesterday morning.

Maj. Sophea added that after her arrest, military police confiscated about 70 kilograms of bush meat, which included meat from antelopes, wild boars, wild cows, iguanas and turtles.

“After her arrest, she was handed over to the provincial forestry administration unit so legal action could be taken against her,” he said.

A provincial forestry administration official, who asked not to be named, told Khmer Times that Ms. Kanha was released yesterday after signing a contract agreeing to not sell bush meat in the future.
She was also fined 960,000 riel (about $240) to put in the state budget. He said the seized bush meat would be destroyed by the provincial forestry administration department.
