Fatal food poisoning. Fish or vegetables; origin unsure.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

One person died and four fell ill after eating pickled fish with vegetables at their home in Siem Reap province’s Prasat Bakong district on Tuesday evening, according to police yesterday.

Deputy district police chief Ken Nisai told Khmer Times that the incident happened at about 7:30pm after an elderly woman and her four grandchildren prepared the pickled fish with wing beans and cabbage at their home in Ambel commune.

However, after eating dinner, they suffered from dizzy spells, nausea and vomiting.

“As a result, an elderly woman, 70-year-old Kong Ploy, died while her four grandchildren only got sick,” he said.

“But they were taken to the hospital right away. They are between eight and 16 years old.”

Mr. Nisai said that shortly after having dinner, Ms. Ploy left her home to pray at a pagoda. “After her arrival she felt unwell, was dizzy and nauseous and then died instantly at the pagoda.”

He added that officials were unsure as to what had caused the woman and her grandchildren to fall ill, saying it was possible the vegetables were to blame.

“Health officials confirmed to us that the victims could have gotten sick from the vegetables, not from the pickled fish they prepared for dinner,” Mr. Nisai said.

“They think the wing beans and cabbage, which came from the market, were not properly cleaned and were tainted with insecticides.”

Mr. Nisai said the children were allowed to leave the hospital after staying one night.

Earlier this month, 36 people, including six Buddhist monks, fell ill after eating pickled fish during a funeral ceremony in Siem Reap province.

Be sure to wash your vegetables thoroughly. They are covered in pesticides.

Now what are we to eat?

I'm betting the pickled fish was the culprit in this case. Nothing more than a guess.

As Mr. Bingham so succinctly wrote earlier this year.

One major problem in Cambodia has been that pesticides that have used in neighboring countries and have been subsequently banned there often end up here. Farmers use these products with little regard for safety procedures, and often use inappropriately high doses, mainly because they can't read the foreign language instructions. If this is going on in relatively developed Thailand, you can imagine what's going on here or in Vietnam, where many of our vegetables are grown.

It's funny how many people think that everything here is grown simply and organically, whereas the truth is often far from that.

And ''organic'' does not mean what most think it means.
+ even if the instuctions were in Khmer what portion % wise could comprehend "Pesticide Dilution Formula"?

Even wash, but still. Better to grow by ourselves.

Ok, sorry.

Be sure to grow your own vegetables, and don't spray them with pesticide.
