UK Football Child Sex Abuse Scandal.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

The big scandal here is going to be the revelations on how the football clubs, including the most prestigious names, have covered up for pedophiles for decades. A former Chelsea player has already come forward to say that he was paid 50,000 pounds by the club to keep quiet.

Police say 350 people have come forward to report child sex abuse in football
Police have been flooded with victims alleging they were abused as children in football and on Thursday said they were investigating alleged attacks on 350 people, with more complaints expected.

The complaints to police came after Guardian revelations about child sexual abuse in football and police chiefs are vowing to hunt down anyone responsible – no matter how long ago the crimes took place.

The 350 victims reporting crimes to police will have their cases investigated, officers say, with a priority being to identifying alleged offenders who may still pose a danger to children.

Police said the calls came in just six days, from 24 to 30 November, and related to all aspects of football, from grassroots up to professional.

The number continues to grow, police said, and victims may have to wait because of the “significant” volume of alleged incidents...

Incredibly, in the UK it is not a criminal offence to conceal or to not report child abuse.

Football club officials who knew of child abusers in ranks will not face criminal charges
Friday 9 December 2016

Prosecution is only possible if police and prosecutors can establish that an individual procured, aided and abetted a crime.
Football club officials who knew that a child abuser was operating with their ranks and did nothing to report or prevent it cannot be charged with a criminal offence, senior officers have indicated.

[But] detectives will not be able to bring charges against individuals who might have known about abuse and did not raise the alarm, even if further assaults occurred as a result. A former Chelsea player alleged a week ago that the club’s former coach Dario Gradi knew that chief scout Eddie Heath had abused him and sought to talk his parents out of pressing their complaint. Mr Gradi, who denies any wrong doing, has not commented on the specific allegation. But to have visited the parents of an alleged victim and sought to placate them and prevent a crime being more widely known about would not constitute a criminal offence.

The absence of a legal responsibility to report a crime applies to most areas of criminal law, including murder, with prosecution only possible if police and prosecutors can establish that an individual procured, aided and abetted a crime – and actually ‘added’ something to it, such as harbouring an offender, for example...

Serious allegations of child abuse involving Barry Bennell were ignored by Manchester City for years.

Manchester City ‘ignored warnings’ and kept Barry Bennell in youth set-up

• Bennell continued scouting and coaching for City, abusing countless boys
• City youth coach Steve Fleet urged club in 1970s to keep away from Bennell
• Bennell convicted of a total of 50 offences against 12 boys

Manchester City, one of the clubs most seriously implicated in the Barry Bennell sexual abuse scandal, have been accused of putting hundreds of boys in danger after it emerged they were warned by one of their own coaches in the late-1970s it was “general knowledge” he was a risk to children.

Bennell, who is facing complaints from another 86 former footballers, continued scouting and coaching for City’s junior teams, raping and molesting countless boys in seven years connected to the club, even though high-ranking officials had been warned to keep away from a man who now faces the rest of his life in prison and has been described as having “almost an insatiable appetite” for young boys.

The revelations leave City facing a number of questions now Bennell has been convicted of 50 counts of sexual abuse against 12 victims. Bennell, 64, will be sentenced on Monday after admitting seven of the charges, with the jury returning guilty verdicts for the other 43 offences.

Andy Woodward extract: 'Telling my story stopped a young guy ending his life'
In an extract from his new book the former footballer discusses going public over the abuse he suffered and the impact that had
Tue 4 Jun 2019 17.00 BST
- There were conversations I needed to have. People I couldn’t just spring this on. The hardest conversations were the ones with Mum and Dad. This was their story, too, wasn’t it?

They’d been there from the start, however much sometimes I’d tried to push them away. This man had been a part of their lives as well as the lives of their children. I wasn’t judging them but I was afraid that other people might. I understood the pain and guilt they felt as parents but I’ll never really know how they dealt with that grief and anger together, how they found the strength not to be destroyed by Barry Bennell...

The dream that had led me to Bennell had been football. And now I wanted to think about that: as well as having an effect on me, on my family and, perhaps, on other victims, Danny was sure this was going to be a very big deal for the game as well.

I had such strong memories of how supportive both Stan Ternent and Neil Warnock had been at Bury and at Sheffield United, all those years ago. I still had their numbers and one evening, during the week before the story came out, I rang them both. When I was playing for them, I knew they both needed to get the most out of me as a player. Now, though, they had no vested interest in what I was doing. I was just a guy – an ex-player – asking for their thoughts and advice. Both of them were adamant: Go on, Woody. Get it done, son. People need to know what’s gone on. The story was being written by a football writer. As well as being about me and about Bennell, it was a story about football.

16 November 2016: I remember I saw the article online before I saw it in a copy of the paper. It was quite shocking to me, in a way, seeing my picture and my words: the truth of it laid out. I think Danny did a great job but, even so, my first reaction was: ‘Oh, fuck, what have I done?’

But that first day of publication was life-changing for me. Maybe for a few other people, too. Online, you can track how many people have read an article. There were a lot. Danny rang me early that morning: ‘Andy, I don’t think you realise how big this is going to be.’ He said the paper had already taken calls from other victims.

This may sound ridiculous but the most important thing in those moments was realising what was happening: people believe me. They believe my story.

Hundreds of boys were abused by Bennell. I couldn’t know what damage had been done to their lives but I hope that reading my story made a difference. Steve and others have said to me since that it was seeing my picture, reading my words, that gave them the courage to come forward themselves. ‘It was seeing you, Woody.’
