A husband and wife went on trial yesterday charged with stealing more than $370,000 from the company where she worked to gamble at casinos.

Phath Chakriya, 38, the former chief accountant at the Borey Phiphup Thmey company, and her husband Hour Kosal, 39, face charges of fraud and breach of special trust by administrators.

The thefts took place last year at the company, owned by tycoon Hong Piv.
He said that after finding out about the theft, Mr. Piv lodged a complaint about her to police and she was arrested on February 19.

“To get justice in this case, my client demands his stolen money back and $100,000 in compensation, and is asking the court to punish both of them severely in line with the law,” he said.

At yesterday’s hearing, Mrs. Chakriya admitted taking the money. She confessed that she had withdrawn the money for her husband to play in casinos. She asked the court for a reduced sentence.

Mr. Kosal denied he had stolen the money, but agreed that he had received stolen money from his wife.

“I took the money to play games in casinos. It was all completely lost,” he said.

“I would like to ask the court to drop my charges and release me,” he added.

A wife and husband were jailed for two years each yesterday – with one year suspended – after stealing $370,000 and blowing it all at a casino.

Over nine months in 2015, Phath Chakriya withdrew the cash from tycoon Hong Piv’s Borey Phiphup Thmey company to give to her husband Hour Kosal.

Ros Piseth, a judge at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, said: “The court decided to convict them to two years each, but the term of their sentences shall be reduced to one year each in prison. The rest of their sentences shall be suspended.
“The court ordered both of them to pay a total of $373,840 in damages and pay another 40 million riel (about $10,000) in compensation to the plaintiff.”
