The link between female problems, alcohol and being "hot inside"

Post by rozzieoz »

You're all such experts on women so someone please explain this.

For Khmer women there's a link between being "hot inside" (pointing at general stomach area), drinking alcohol and female issues related to pregnancy, periods etc.

(Yes I said period, get over it).

A pregnant friend was very worried about her baby because she had drunk a lot in her youth and "got very hot inside."

GF insisted she needed a shot of vodka last night to make herself hot inside - something about fixing a lady problem.

How do you educate people or don't you? Is it better to just smile and hand over the vodka? Some things seem impossible to explain.

How do you know that they are not educating you?

I like to keep an open mind, rather than dismissing things out of hand.

Yeah, they do some really weird things, but maybe they are right about some of these things. Who knows?

It's fascinating hey and you may be right - I've never tried to "educate" her, I'm certainly no doctor lol

Yes, there is this big thing around pregnancy and hotness. When my missus was pregnant about ten years ago she prepared all these herbs and roots in a pestle and mortar, then steeped them in rice wine for a long time. As far as I know this was kept till after the birth. After birth there is coldness, which is why after birth a woolly hat is worn, by both mother and child. There is still a practice of burning a fire under the bed of a woman who has just given birth, but it is not so common anymore in the city.

Outside of pregnancy, being "hot inside" is a common ailment here which may sometimes be explained by fevers but is more likely an explanation for a certain imbalance, a bit like a Yin/ Yan thing.

Edit; Just found this article that covers the hot thing well:

I have female staff who have no problem calling me in the morning to say that they won't be in to work because they have stomach cramps because they are having their period.
Not a big deal over here.
My kids, aged 9 to 13, know that mummy has 'cheam' every month. No big deal. Unlike western society, where it's all hush, hush.

Now that is progressive thinking. I wonder what events took place to arrive at that conclusion.
