Salary/wage for a Khmer gardener?
I would like to hire a gardener to maintain my small yard, mostly pavement and shade trees, plus help create a couple of nice raised flower and vegetabe beds. I was thinking 3-4 hours, twice a week. What should I offer? I want to pay fairly, maybe even generously if they do good work. What would a good starting offer be?
As always, thanks for the help!

$8 to $10/hour for short serious work or $20 plus lunch money for 1 day

USD 1,920 a month (assuming a 6-day working week)? You can't be serious?boozyoldman wrote:$8 to $10/hour for short serious work or $20 plus lunch money for 1 day

$8 to $10 an hour? Holy crap. This is unskilled labour, they're not going to be some Japanese zen garden tuner. An average unskilled job is about $120 a month (working in a bar) for an eight hour day, six days a week. $22 a day is, what, $450ish for a 21 day month! $5 a day if you want to be generous.boozyoldman wrote:$8 to $10/hour for short serious work or $20 plus lunch money for 1 day

Thank you all for your replies, only... I am so much more confused than before I asked
$10 an hour sounds really high.
My wife makes less than that as an English teacher- with muliple linguistics degrees & experience at prestigious school in US.
On the other hand, $5 a day sounds too low: even if they worked every day of the month, they wouldn't make minimum wage.

I'd think the pay scale would be same as a maid. 3-4 hours twice a week... maybe $100-120/month? Does that sound about right?

Minimum wage for a garment worker (a 50 to 60 hour week) is going to be $150-odd ($153?) a month, currently $140. There is no minimum wage for gardeners. Expect any tools or equipment you provide to get broken or go missing, so include this in your figures.

If your wife is making less than that, she might want to consider finding another job unless there's a shipload of bennies you haven't mentioned. That is approximately what Cambodian teachers of Engrish make. Of course you would have to leave Shitsville for PP or SR, but as Voltaire said, " Il faut cultiver son proper jardin."

As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

First things first buy a dog to protect your property from the gardener et al. Purchase trip-wire activated close circuit security system c/w all round enhanced locks for your property including shed for said gardening tools.
Circa $2-3k non-recurring, $1k recurring.
Employ gardener for $5 quid a morning.
