Interior Minister orders crackdown on illegal gambling.

Interior Minister Sar Kheng yesterday ordered security forces to crack down on illegal gambling as there have been more than 500 cases across the country over the past 10 months, according to a report.

At the Interior Ministry yesterday, Mr. Kheng instructed officials at all levels to jointly crack down on unlicensed gambling – including the lotteries, cockfighting, betting on football and arcade-style fish shooting games – as they are a danger to security and social and public order and lead to the destruction of people’s property, he said...

National Police spokesman Kirth Chantharith said according to the report, there have been 520 cases of illegal gambling over the past 10 months including 188 cases of running lotteries, 178 cases of card and dice games, 58 cases of cockfighting, 82 cases of fish shooting and 14 cases of football betting in Phnom Penh and many provinces throughout the country.

He said that despite efforts to crack down, underground gambling networks exist and illegal gambling still occurs in some places where there are powerful people to help protect those taking part, making local police afraid to enforce the law.
