Why is Phuket not called Koh

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Why is Phuket not called Koh

Hey Richard, oh font of all wisdom. Why is Phuket not called Koh like every other Thai island? I just had a go at a hipster on twitter calling Koh Samui just Samui. I knew what his comeback would be so what is the answer?

No idea,its just always been just ....Phuket

เกาะ (koh) just means island

You disappoint me, the hipster may have outpointed me. Phuket has an interesting history according to wiki. Bukit means hill in Malay.

Saw a video today on Thai visa showing a fight in broad daylight between a Russian and thai taxi drivers in a busy area of Phuket. If there is going to be a problem in Thailand with foreigners at the current time I suspect drunken young Aussies or Russians against the Phuket transport mafia would be high on my list.

I'm not an expert, but i think it might be to do with that Phuket is classed as a province and not solely an island, as there are a collection of other named islands that are apart of Phuket, just a guess like but to me it sort of makes sense :D

Thanks Jamie and that was my reply to him, it is classed as a province. He hated being labeled a hipster. Are you a hipster Jamie? I shall be back early December, I would like to catch up.
