Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. Navy Chief’s Son Starts Speedboat Service.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Yet another speedboat company going out to the islands . It's getting awfully crowded out there.

Navy Chief’s Son Starts Speedboat Service.
by Phan Soumy | October 4, 2016 | អានជាភាសាខ្មែរ

A new speedboat company started by Tea Vichet, the son of navy commander Tea Vinh, will begin offering regular service connecting Sihanoukville with popular island getaways Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem today.

The company will charge $20 for its four daily departures on its two 25-seat and one 50-seat speedboats, said Heng Kimsor, general manager of Mr. Vichet’s GTVC. That’s the same round-trip price as its speedboat competitors on the coast...

Tang Sochetkresna, director of the Preah Sihanouk provincial tourism department, said 42 boat operators already ply the route, but that GTVC’s boats were faster and newer...

There's a lot to be said regarding the various speedboat operators, but not on the record. Some have to ability to offer below cost service to push others to fold. We'll see how it plays out.

How did Navy Chief's son get the money to buy those speedboats? Oops, too many questions, sorry. I hate those islands. Way too crowded now. They were initially nice because they were secluded and except for a handful of foreign tourists, were pretty empty. Now they're pretty much overrun by both local and foreign visitors. I guess in 10 years they'll be nice, but for different reasons (paved roads, nicer resorts etc). Ko Chang could serve as a decent reference point to the clueless authorities.

Those 350 Verado's are extremely well engineered & super quiet. Still at 4500RPM they are burning 53LPH X 3 = 159LPH. Plus a very expensive maintenance schedule.

it would be nice if they could reinstate the service between Koh Kong and Snookyville. It was much more pleasant and interesting to go by boat than by bus.

Yea, especially in the rainy season when a storm hit the coast and big waves hit the boat at a 45 degree angle and the boat is top heavy with all the produce. You look out the window and see nothing but water and wonder if you are in a submarine . Then you look around for the life jackets but there are none and it makes you wonder [ in the kingdom of wonder ] [ WHY ] the fuck you did not swim or take a airplane. Anything to avoid the smell of spew from the Cambodians that have just had a big feed of prohock and ??? before they got on the submarine . Oh and the toilet smell is still imprinted into my brain after 12 years of memory. Good-bye fucking submarine I'll take a bus anyday.

The only one that was pleasant was the one with the open deck where you could sit or stand and make an easy escape (if necessary). The other ones that looked like an airplane with no wings were deaths traps, designed for river travel not open sea.

the bottom line is were there ever any accidents or fatalities ? Did anyone ever drown taking those ferries. I would rather suffer from the smell of spew any day than risk travelling with some of the kamikaze bus drivers on this route

Fatal tourist bus crash
One Russian tourist died instantly and 46 other passengers – largely foreigners – were injured and rushed to hospital yesterday afternoon when a tourist bus spun off the road and slammed into a house while en route from Sihanoukville to a destination in Koh Kong, officials said

Yep , there was a time when you had to decide whether to take the submarine or a minibus and also walk.

And a time before the bridges were built.
