Australian Expat Peter Maitland Has Leg Amputated After Motorbike Accident in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Breaking news from Cambodia can be found here. CEO often finds Khmer news and translates it into English for our readers if it is interesting to expats, locals, Cambodians living abroad and anyone who wants to stay informed of the latest local and international news stories about Cambodia and our neighbors in South East Asia. There are many sources for Khmer news articles and they can all be found here in one place. Most of the media comes out of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap or Sihanoukville, but we cover national Cambodian news from all provinces.

He said, "Sorry, not my fault" and the competent authorities let him on his way.

It's a bit unclear as he mentions that people should have insurance... and that it's costing $100k, but was only trying to raise $22k.

Anyway my understanding is that travel insurance companies will get you medevaced to your country of origin ASAP and then wash their hands of you, so maybe that's what has happened.

Hmmmm, I saw both car/Lexus mentioned. Let me look into it further...
Definitely a Toyota Camry.
Here's the original link posted on the other forum https://kohsantepheapdaily.com.kh/article/151231.html from which you can search the number plate.
Quite a few sites report the accident, describing the Camry dragging the victim's motorbike along, before it comes loose and the Camry flees to Wat Moha Montrey.
None give the identity of the driver of the Camry, but he's always seen with a phone in his hand phoning in for help.
This 20+ minute video catches the aftermath http://www.khmerscoop.com/life-social/178804 and the driver and his companions.
Other sites have good shots of the women too.

Thanks for the links Rama.
This is definitely in the category of "worst case scenario", or what could go wrong with my life in Cambodia. Even if you have insurance, there are so many added costs for the family, going to and staying in Bangkok for a start. If this can remind people that insurance is important in a country like Cambodia all the better.

But Pete is dealing with this like a real champ. There but for the grace of ...
Best wishes.

Just when I thought this story couldn't get any more heart-wrenching, a co-worker at Peter Maitland's school posted all the get-well-soon cards from his students:

One student was even nice enough to have Vietnam losing to Australia by ONLY 1 point, LoL. There's hope for the future!
