Police in Pursat province’s Phnom Kravanh district police yesterday confiscated and burned a marijuana plantation in Pro Ngel commune’s Kampeng village, but did not arrest the grower as police said it was a small crop and the suspect was unaware the plant was an illegal substance.

“Those marijuana plants, [the owner] planted them on his land as medication for his cattle. He planted only a small amount as he and his family did not understand the law,” district police chief Vorng Saveth said, adding that police confiscated a total of 67 marijuana plants.

He added that the grower, Meas Dy, was merely asked to sign a contract agreeing never to plant the illegal substance again.

Mr. Saveth said district police had been cracking down on marijuana plantations over the past few years and had so far destroyed four plantations, with 7,637 plants in Rokat commune alone in May 2015...

The irony. More wanton destruction of the evil weed that must not be used for medicinal purposes due to the fact that some far off country declared a "war on drugs" many moons ago. And of course they know best. And they are changing their minds. But someone forgot to send a memo to village policemen in Cambodia.

More than 50 marijuana plants were destroyed on Saturday morning in Battambang province’s Sangker district by police, who said the owner also agreed never to grow the plant again.

Buth Vuthy, the chief of staff of Sangker district, told Khmer Times yesterday that police officials found 54 marijuana plants next to 44-year-old Moeun Vuthy’s house in O’Dambang 1 commune.

“The owner of the marijuana plants did not know growing this kind of plant was illegal because he believed that marijuana can help reduce the pain from injuries. That’s what he planted them for, to use them that way,” he said...
