Citing a lack of professional tour guides in Sihanoukville, the Ministry of Tourism will offer training to 130 candidates in the coming months, offering the first two-month course to candidates who speak Chinese.
Tang Socheat Kresna, director of the Sihanoukville tourism department, said the training would be conducted in cooperation with the Intellectual Capital Center, a local vocational training institute.

Ok, what about the Angkor beer factory. And someone should set up a beer-tasting place to sample local beers... oh yeah, like a bar.
I'm not saying there's nothing to do in SV mind. But the beauty of a deserted beach is that it is "deserted".

"On your right you will see three Ancient Britons who have been soaking up cans of Zorok all morning in front of the discount supermarket and in front of you are some tuk-tuk entrepreneurs eager to introduce you to some friendly ladies and/or interesting drugs."

its not so much about having nothing to do, its more a case of whats worthy of requiring a guided tour?
Kampot sure, you got the bokor mountain, salt lakes, pepper farms etc
Sihanoukville, im not really sure whats "too see" that requires an actual guide
i could just be under thinking

Right. Trying to be constructive here: What sort of "guides" are they thinking of ? I was thinking of tour groups, but maybe not.
The clue might be here:
I can understand that some people would be prepared to pay someone to tell them where to go, where to eat, and deal with the compulsory Cambodian complications. Shame that means they miss out on the "real Cambodia", but hey, you can't have everything.
(I'm sure some people would prefer less hassles and less Cambodia, especially when they're only in town for a few days. They're tourists after all.)
The clue might be here:
The tuktuk drivers may not be overjoyed about this new idea, but I could imagine that some tourists would like to pay a guide, who speaks their language, to organise a day out with transport around town and to the beaches, without having to deal with all the shit.Nhim Niv, assistant manager at The Secret Garden, located on O’Tres Beach, said that while tourists managed to get around, there were not many professionals around to show them the way.
“Normally I see the tuk-tuk drivers take the tourists around as their tour guide—with a map with them,” he said.

ACU now monitoring tour guide exam

More than 100 students taking the country’s tour-guide exam – a test that has had a history of bribery – were monitored by the Anti-Corruption Unit this week at Cambodian Mekong University.
This year marks the first in which the ACU monitored the exam – the first step in becoming a licensed tour-guide in the Kingdom – mimicking the body’s oversight of the national Grade 12 exam, which has been widely hailed for largely eliminating cheating and bribery from the testing process.
On Tuesday, 108 students took the exam at the private university in Phnom Penh, which is currently licensed by the Ministry of Tourism to administer the exam in the capital, said Keo Buntheng, chief of public relations and student affairs at Cambodian Mekong...
