Rights activist Hall ordered to pay Bt10m in libel suit
27 March 2018
The Phra Khanong Court yesterday ordered human-rights activist Andy Hall to pay a Bt10-million compensation to a pineapple firm over his comment on its labour practices.
Natural Fruit Co Ltd sued Hall for defamation following an interview he gave to Al-Jazeera English TV channel in Myanmar in April 2013.
The court also ordered Hall to pay a sum of Bt10,000 for the plaintiff’s lawyer and court fees, and interest at 7.5 per cent per annum from the date of the filing of this case until the amount is fully paid.
Hall, who is overseas at the moment, said he would appeal against the ruling.

Court Acquits British Labor Rights Activist Hall
May 31, 2018 5:10 pm
BANGKOK — An appeals court on Thursday dismissed criminal defamation charges against British labor activist Andy Hall, whose research was the basis for a report on labor abuses at a pineapple factory in southern Thailand.
The Bangkok South Criminal Court acquitted Hall after Natural Fruit Company Ltd. accused the labor rights activist of defaming it in a report produced by Finnwatch, a Finnish corporate watchdog. The fruit company employed Burmese migrant workers who alleged abuses by the company.
Hall said he was very surprised by the ruling.
“Very surprised and somewhat speechless… But certainly there are so many challenges remaining and so many cases pending also. But maybe something moved politically. The judgement was seeming revolutionary in support of me,” he said in an interview from Kathmandu, Nepal, where he works for an ethical migrant recruitment organization.
Hall fled Thailand in November 2016, saying he felt threatened by mounting lawsuits filed against him by a host of companies. That same year, the Court of First Instance handed Hall a suspended three-year prison sentence and a 150,000 baht fine, which he appealed.
Thursday’s acquittal also saw Computer Crime Act charges dropped, after the court ruled the law – amended in 2017 – could not be used retroactively.
Another pending case includes an April 10 Civil Court order that Hall pay 10 million baht in damages to the factory, following his conviction in a separate civil defamation case.

I agree. I know Richard did a fair bit of border-hopping skullduggery in his day, and fair play to all that.zmth wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 8:07 pmUnless things have really changed in the last few years that is really incorrect. However, I don't think it's a great solution these days. You're pretty much in limbo if you don't have valid entry and exit stamps. If you have to avoid jail or death it's worth a bash but there's a good chance you'll get caught, (especially without valid documents) and sooner or later get sent straight back.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

BUT
in 2015 and 2016, i accidentally drove thru the exit checkpoint in Cambodia at Pailin and the entry point for Thailand, The bar was up and it was ONLY after i realized i was driving on the other side of the road did i realize i was back in Thailand. We then drove back to immigration and walked across to Cambodia to get stamped out than back to Thailand immigration to get stamped in. When we went into immigration in Thailand they thought we were leaving cause my car was pointed towards Camboida.
Last Oct we were at the poi pet border , (she needed to get her wp thru the agency) and gf wanted to go see her family, so we just walked across the border, ( avoiding the building where u go upstairs to exit Thailand) and had her aunt come pick us up at a casino
next day just walked back across..
Would not suggest anyone do it thou...and its not a solution for an overstay....
PLUS I have NEVER had anyone on my numerous border crossings look in my car>> so anyone could have been laying down in the back seat.
Of course ur then in the next country without a proper entry..
People residing in Thai immigration jails were CAUGHT in roundups, few if any were caught entering or leaving the country..
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
