Bali-Lombok ferry explosion: 1 dead, 20 injured, all foreigners.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

BALI, Indonesia (AP) — A German woman was killed and about 20 other people were injured in an explosion Thursday on a speedboat that was ferrying them from the Indonesian tourist island of Bali to neighboring Lombok, police said.

Karangasem district police chief Sugeng Sudarso said the "Gili Cat 2" fast boat had about 40 people including crew on board. He said all the passengers have been evacuated and the injured are being treated at a local medical clinic.

Police have not yet determined the cause of the explosion, but a member of the forensics team investigating the scene said initial indications are it was an accident...

WTF fuel do these boats use? Boats rarely blow up. Contrary to Hollywood.

Update: The woman who died was Austrian, not German, according to latest reports. A second woman has been confirmed dead also, nationality unknown for the moment. The boat itself was Australian made, owned and operated ...

[Police chief] Mr Sudarso said the fuel tank on the ferry was located next to a battery, which was one possible cause of the explosion...

He said the last annual safety check of the Gili Cat II was in February of this year.

"The Gili Cat II was deemed safe to sail when it departed this morning."

The Gili Cat website says the company is "Australian owned and managed and we use Australian-made boats". "You can't get any safer than that!!" it says.

The website says the company, which started operations in 2007, was the first fast boat company to offer a daily service between Bali and the Gili Islands.

"Other operators may be claim to be the safest and fastest but "copy cats" always do," it says.

"Our aluminium-hulled boat is made in Australia to international standards.

No other boat on the Bali-Gili-Lombok run can make that claim and that's guaranteed."

All Gili Cat services were suspended until further notice, according to http://www.gilibookings.com.

Last June, 25 passengers, including four Australians, were injured in a fire on a fast ferry travelling between Lombok and Bali...

that is a dangerous stretch of water with many unseaworthy vessels. gets very big tides with the shallow java sea on one side and the depths of the indian ocean on the west.
submarines sometimes use this strait.

A fuel tank with a battery next to it is not "international standard." Probably was a local add on, had little or no inspection of the vessel, or the inspection was money changing hands in exchange for an inspection document. If it was petrol powered and not diesel, that just an accident waiting to happen.
