A famous kickboxer and two other suspected drug traffickers were each sentenced to four years in jail by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday for selling about 11 grams of crystal methamphetamine to an undercover police officer at a hotel in Tuol Kork district in February.

The three suspects were identified as Vong Sithai, 35, a well-known kickboxer from the E70 Brigade Unit’s boxing club, Phin Sopheak, 26, a kickboxer from the same club, and Phal Lamya, 23, a karaoke girl, according to judge Heng Sokna.

“The court decided to sentence them to four years each in prison,” he said.

He said they were arrested by the Interior Ministry’s Anti-Drug Police in Boeng Sralang commune on February 3 and were charged with “drug trafficking” under article 40 of the Law on Drug Control.

Colonel Toek Sony, the deputy chief of the Interior Ministry’s 1st Anti-Drug Intervention Unit, said the group was arrested after bringing a package of drugs worth $450 to sell to undercover agents at the Sun City Hotel in Tuol Kork district on the evening of February 3.

Mr. Sithai said the drugs belonged to a man named Oudom, who is at large. He claimed to have been hired by Mr. Oudom for 200,000 riel (about $50) to bring the drugs to a buyer at the Sun City Hotel.

Where does one draw a line between a string and cold-blooded entrapment?
