Someone just realised that they were missing a great opportunity, but $3 per ticket sounds a bit steep to me. I suppose all the prices will go up.

Sihanoukville Boats Ordered to Pay Government $3 Per Ticket

Ferry operators that ply the choppy crossing between Sihanoukville and the tourist-trodden islands offshore have been ordered to begin paying the provincial government $3 per ticket sold. Companies say the fee will hurt coastal tourism.

In a letter dated Friday, Preah Sihanouk provincial governor Yun Min said local authorities would use the money to conserve and develop the coastline, and thereby “attract more tourists to the beaches and islands.”

Yeah, it sure is great that all that money will go back into the community by developing and protecting the coastline. I'm not sure why the ferry companies are the ones who collect the taxes though ?

Wow... What exactly is this "tax" based on? Sounds totally arbitrary. Shouldn't the companies simply be taxed on their revenue rather than per boat trip? Sure sounds like a few people at the top decided they wanted to line their pockets and get some extra cash with no work involved.

More conflict between the authorities and the ferry boat operators in perspective.The Preah Sihanouk authorities have announced that all ferries between Sihanoukville and the islands will have a minimum return price of $20. They say it is to prevent price wars and vicious undercutting between competing companies. They are probably also concerned with getting their $3 off every ticket. The ferry companies are unhappy with both measures announced by local government authorities.

Island Ferry Prices Set at $20 Return

In an effort to curb a price war among ferry operators in Preah Sihanouk province, authorities have given them one month to comply with a directive making all tickets between Sihanoukville and the islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem at $20 return, to the anger of operators.

In an announcement on Tuesday, deputy provincial governor Sok Phon said the new price was being set to counter negative competition.

“In order to improve the business of transporting visitors to the islands, the administration of Preah Sihanouk province set measures for company owners and boat owners,” he wrote, noting that $3 from each return ticket would be taken by authorities to pay for coastal development.

He added that the new directive would start today and any transgressors would face the seizure of their boats or removal of their business permits. No provision was given on how authorities would collect the $3-per-ticket tax.

The news was met with anger by boat operators, some of whom charge $10 for return tickets to the islands...

tie up with "resorts" on the island, tickets are "inclusive" in room price, tout the boat ferries as "free service" provided by the resorts, see those idiots try to cover loop one after another, these idiots are killing tourism not helping it, market forces should drive prices not government policies, when will these idiots ever learn?

The supply ship has always been r10,000 for anyone who can be arsed to go down to the far end of the port and sit and wait for the boat to be loaded. bob across to the island for two hours. We now have two small fast speedboats, the General's son's one has three outboards and a cracked (starred) windscreen, if the speedo is accurate it'll hit 32km/h (why is it not in knots? Bloody foreigners). Not bad for $6 one way. The speed is affected by them going to any pier you want, which is how I discovered Coconut Beach, which seems quite plush and upmarket.
