Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

The drugs that wreak havoc in the highlands

Fri, 12 August 2016
Phak Seangly and Alessandro Marazzi Sassoon

As substance abuse increases nationally, Jarai villagers in the once-remote province of Ratanakkiri grapple with the arrival of a drug they cannot name – though they know it is harming their youth

At first glance, Saom Trork Chas village in Ratanakkiri seems little more than a simple rural community: the sound of children chanting their lessons drifts across a dusty schoolyard; Jarai women carry traditional baskets on their way to and from market; and, between the stilted homes, pigs waddle by.

But this is a place wrestling with a significant drug abuse problem, says 42-year-old community organiser Sal Thi. He first noticed villagers using drugs in 2012. Since then, he says, it has become prevalent among men and boys.

Saom Trork Chas lies more than an hour’s drive from the provincial capital, Banlung, and 15 minutes off the main road. But that relative isolation has not protected it from a drug’s scourge and the social ills that go with it, says Thi.

“Addicts buy the tablets or the powder – it costs $20, $30 or $100 – and if they don’t have the money, they steal pigs, cattle or relatives’ money,” he says. “The drug addicts are cruel. They attack us whenever they are angry.”

The total and unconditional legalisation of cannabis would quite possibly reduce the desire to use meth.

Or would it?

Plan for rehab centres released, questioned
Fri, 30 December 2016

A statement on the National Police website announced intentions to build drug treatment centres in the capital of every province, but one anti-drug authority called the practicality of such a plan into question.

According to the statement, National Police anti-drug chief Mok Chito claimed the project will begin in January 2017.

“The royal government plans to create drug rehabilitation treatment centres in all provincial capitals across the country,” the statement reads.“At present, there are seven state treatment centres . . . This is not proportional to the number of drug addicts, which is more than 10,000, with only 40 percent receiving treatment,” Chito is quoted as saying.

A recent government report showed 9,802 people have been arrested for drug-related crimes this year, and estimates there are 18,554 addicts in the country.

But Meas Vyrith, secretary-general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, questioned whether there was sufficient funding for such an ambitious project. “It is a theoretical plan,” Vyrith said yesterday...
