Re: Weekend in Singapore
Yesterday before leaving Singapore for Bangkok went to buy takeaway durians at Ghim Moh, Ah Seng Durian stall became famous when owner was jailed for 3 weeks and fined for under-declaring over $700k of income.
The stall
Popular mao-san-wang variety durian
and another
and another
and another
All 4 of them
Professionally packed double seal vacuum pack
No smell at all, checked-in lugage
At home
Yummy - Thai durians even their best variety cannot stand close to this mao-san-wang

Re: Weekend in Singapore
@yong ...what a fantastic thread! I spent several years living in Singapore (Sembawang) as a child, so many memories and an appreciation of certain foods which are still with me. I've only stopped over in Singas a few times in my adult life, each time it's straight to the Hawker centres for satay and roti canai/prata...love it.
I have just booked flights and 9 nights accommodation in Singapore for the end of October, going to take my wife and kids for a surprise holiday, and will be referring to your thread for some pro tips, especially the Durian stall which vacuum packs so that we can bring some back for the family.
Looking forward to the holiday, especially taking the kids to some of the theme parks and wildlife parks, oh, and definitely looking forward to the food! Not looking forward to my bank balance at the end though!
Any advice on the best spots to watch the Rugby World Cup?

So what? I can't stand close to any Durian.

As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Re: Weekend in Singapore
Gee Yong, you sure know how to make a man feel hungry...
Have you thought of opening your own restaurant? - Yong's Epicurean Wonders
I would hop on the nearest Air Asia plane and fly straight there for one of your feasts.
Right now.

Re: Weekend in Singapore
This is very rare but one can still get a filling meal at US$1.80 ($2.50) in Singapore. Recently opened Lor Mee and Prawn Noodle stall in Mei Chin Market at Mei Ling Street Queenstown.
Market 2nd floor hawker centre
There are 2 innovations I saw in this stall - queuing system and automatic cooking noodle
The stall that sells Lor Mee and Prawn Noodle - people are queuing to make their order and taking queue number
The receipt has a queue number so just watch this counter who will be calling for you
Deep fryer - freshly fried dory fish
Automatic boiling noodle like some ramen kitchen
The kitchen
US$1.80 prawn noodle - even though it is cheap doesn't mean its not nice, surprisingly the soup is rich in prawn flavour and has a old school style of taste, simple yet great prawn noodle I will definitely come back for more
US$1.80 lormee - 2 large pieces of fish and half egg, so its cheap yet generous with the ingredients, gravy is nicely even and taste of stew base and herbs its nice
Compare the above to this US$2.60
Satisfying breakfast today
