Visiting Koh Trong, Kratie

Do you have a Cambodian trip report you want to share? Post it here, and feel free to link to your blog if it's a travel blog for Cambodia, South East Asia, or anywhere really. You can ask and answer questions about travel advice in Cambodia or just share your pictures and videos with us. Most people who live in or visit Cambodia have also checked out nearby countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, and you can get to most of these countries by traveling overland, so put any travel plans, reviews or questions here. Discussions about dirt bike trails in here as well.

Visiting Koh Trong, Kratie

A brief introduction and guide to Koh Trong. Part 1.
Any photos without links are mine. Going through old photos takes time so I'll divide this into several short posts instead of one long one.

When you get to Kratie and you gaze at the sunset across the Mekong while drinking a warm can of Anchor on the riverfront, you are probably thinking that what you see is the other side of the river. In fact, the stretch of water before you is just one arm of the Mekong, and what you see is Koh Trong.
Image
The last ferry from Kratie to Koh Trong leaves just before nightfall. Last information, the last ferry back to Kratie from the island leaves about 17:00 or 17:30. Check this when you arrive if you don't want to find yourself stuck for the night. The ferry costs 2000r each trip. (AFAIK this is still the price.)

AM, if I visit there, I should drink a can of Anchor too? :p

It is far from Phnom Penh so if I want to visit there, at least I spend 3days.However I never visit Kratie at all.

When you arrive on the island by boat, there is no jetty, just a huge expanse of sand to stagger across to get up to the island paths or the main drag. Just like a "real" beach it gets larger and smaller according to the whims of the Mekong.
Image
There is only one track around the island and one through the middle. Choices of transport : foot, cycle or oxcart.
Image
There are many convenient rest stops on the trail.

Vietnamese pagoda at the end of the island.

The Vietnamese fishing village on the other side of the island.

Local petrol station. (There are no cars and few motos.)

The local bar - sorry Klang and Black Panther only:

Casual wear is fine.

This island won't remain like this for long. Things have already changed since I took these photos, but not too much. The bungalow-building has already begun and there are various places to stay overnight if you want to. You can also just do a day trip over from Kratie. Bicycles can be hired on the island - much easier than bringing your own over on the boat.
Go visit Kratie. Only 4 hours by minivan.
There is a map of Koh Trong and further info here : http://www.camboguide.com/nw/wp-content ... -Trail.pdf

This is a nice report. I hope more posters will report where they have been to.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Except for the fact that the mobile reception is perfect because you can actually see the tower on the mainland it is so close.
