25 Things Nobody Tells You About Traveling While Fat

Do you have a Cambodian trip report you want to share? Post it here, and feel free to link to your blog if it's a travel blog for Cambodia, South East Asia, or anywhere really. You can ask and answer questions about travel advice in Cambodia or just share your pictures and videos with us. Most people who live in or visit Cambodia have also checked out nearby countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, and you can get to most of these countries by traveling overland, so put any travel plans, reviews or questions here. Discussions about dirt bike trails in here as well.

25 Things Nobody Tells You About Traveling While Fat

Like, no skinny person has ever stopped before booking a flight off to some exotic destination to google “am I too fat to fly?”

Fat is a subjective term, but let’s just get this out of the way: I’m fat. We don’t have to attach qualifiers or numbers to it. I don’t need to prove my fat credentials

Depending on the country, you’ll either get hit on more, or way less.
So in some countries, your voluptuous curves will attract cat-calls and pickup lines. In others, they’ll get you angry looks and disapproving glares. In either scenario, practice your best pissed-off fat lady face (the more chins, the better) and apply it to whichever situation you rubs you the wrong way (in my case, all of them!).

Don’t forget to bring a towel.
Otherwise you’ll get to experience that ~sexy~ moment when the towel that your hostel/hotel gives you is too small to go around your waist/bust/thigh (seriously, what is this, a washcloth?!) and you have to walk across the entire hostel trying not to flash every single person.

Your boobs will attract a lot of attention … from other women.
My friend Hannah said, “I never expected women to get more excited about my boobs than men. While traveling through Vietnam, I kept getting comments about my “big, sexy” chest. A couple of them even went in for a feel (um, excuse you!) before sadly looking down at their smaller chests.

People will make really uncomfortable statements about your appetite.
Like “YOU EAT SO MUCH” as you’re enjoying your completely normal-sized plate of regular food. Or maybe a confused “you’re not eating more than that?” as you tuck into a delicious, refreshing salad, because fat people also enjoy vegetables, Becky.

Think a bike tour sounds like a fun, relaxing way to see a new city? Think again.
Were you imagining yourself cheerfully re-enacting a scene from Vicky Christina Barcelona? I wish. Instead, welcome to that awkward moment when you realize that your booty has betrayed you and it will NOT fit on the teeny tiny bike seat. While you play slip-n-slide with the world’s tiniest bike seat, you’ll probably get insulted by some random dude in Bogota who assumes you don’t speak Spanish and can’t understand that he’s making fun of you while you struggle-bus. Repeat after me: callate tu boca, hijueputa!

The idea that seeing the world is going from place to place to look at obvious things is an illusion natural to dull minds.

Right, 1,2,3...
How long before the rude comments start about fat western women ?
Ok as a bet, I predict that about 50% of posters here will post something like - This is why I came to Cambodia. We'll see. Would be good to be wrong. :stir:

Some large-size friends of mine came to Cambodia for a visit, and yes, they did have problems with small seats in minivans (so they paid for two seats each to be comfortable), and buying clothes in the markets wasn't easy, but otherwise it was not an issue.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Well... As old Anchor Moy is requesting a clean(ish) thread .... There are some positive aspects.

I found that they were generally very enthusiastic in the sack.

Quite memorable actually...

A fat sourpuss on the other hand - or a Feminazi - noooooo...

I believe the Khmer maxim is "The bigger the bowl, the more the soup." Perhaps explorer could share it written in Khmer for us with phonetic pronunciation of course. It is the kind of phrase that should be in every travellers vocabulary in the event of an emergency.

Some people admire fatness. They think fatness is a thing to be proud of. They stuff their children till they are so fat they can only waddle around and tend to show breathing problems if they move too fast. Don't worry, if you understand local culture you will know that this is cute. Some foreigners think it is okay to be fat, they often come from communities where being fat is normal. Being fat should never be normal. In many parts of the US and Europe, you will get accused of having AIDS if you don't an ass the size of a Peterbuilt Wrecker. There's a middle ground there, so people need to stop pigging out or we'll end up fuct.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

It’s called the fat acceptance. We just get used to it, from slightly overweight in our 30’ to obese at 50 years old.
I think we tend to accept this as a natural thing, just like aging. Both will kill us though.
