Thai Smile to expand service to Cambodia
Tue, 20 September 2016

Thai Smile, a wholly owned subsidiary of Thai Airways, will begin operating direct flights between Phnom Penh and Bangkok starting in October, according to online aviation news sites.

The airline will run one flight a day between the capitals in addition to operating its existing service between Bangkok and Siem Reap, which began in February of this year.

Good news, I hope. But PP is not on their flights menu yet.

Sick of Air Asia's lousy sked and Bangkok Air's price gouging and poor value.

Price wise, AA is hard to beat. But leaving BKK at 6:50 am or thereabouts means getting up at 3 am. Or choosing the later flight, which puts you in PP at rush hour.

AA is only good if you get a sale, otherwise it's often around $180, which is shit value considering you could spend an extra ten to thirty bucks and get Bangkok Airways.

AA has sales all the time though, luckily.

Not when I need them. Plus, taking the sky train out of SV ends up cheaper and faster than the usual taxi and/or bus route out of DMK (or whatever it's called). I know they have a shuttle service, but I always ended up taking a taxi both ways from DMK, which ends up pricier than a ticket via Bangkok Airways (which includes a meal) followed by the sky train. Faster and better value imo.

I've been watching the airfares for a few months but keep changing my mind about going BKK-PP. However, it's been running 4500 baht ($130US) on AA vs 7500 ($215) fairly consistently. The best thing BKK Air has going for it is the 5-flights/day sked. Otherwise, I think it's gone downhill the last few years. Seriously, taking the bus out to the plane (a freaking ATR72!) when you've paid 7500 baht for a 1-hour flight? Even those paying double for "premium" seats have to take a bus. Idiots!

Also, if I want to get somewhere, like the airport, I take a train. BTS to Mochit 45 baht, taxi to DMK, 140. Out to swampy: BTS 25 baht, Makasan, 15 baht, and 35 baht to Swampy. That said, the laughable transit security checks have been a pain in the butt. The checks have been getting stricter too, at all stations, with even police on duty the odd time.
