Ok, Sorya is one of the largest bus companies in Cambodia - they have some new buses as well as some total wrecks. A lot depends on which sort of bus you get. Anything can happen - you might break down, get stuck, the aircon breaks down and the windows don't open - all these things have happened to me, which doesn't mean they will happen to you - but they might.obelisks wrote:just saying" it's a Sorya bus "means nothing to me because I don't live in CambodiaAnchor Moy wrote:Obelisks, it's a Sorya bus and a cambodian road, so be prepared.obelisks wrote:

It's a long trip - just be zen - you'll get there eventually. There are stops to eat and pee.
(I think there is a thread about bus trips from hell here somewhere. There's sure to be a story about a Sorya bus )
Let us know how it goes.

Also, parts of this road are being repaired. The road conditions vary from day to day so its impossible to predict, but there are stretches just north of PP and north of Kratie that were pretty bad when I went through a couple of weeks ago.
So this is what I mean by Sorya buses and Cambodian roads Better expect the worst and you'll probably pleasantly surprised.
(Have you thought about taking the plane ?)

No, it's not a comfortable bus.
I've always liked Sorya Bus Company because they're constantly mediocre.

thanks for that. I have been on the bus between PP and Koh Kong once.Anchor Moy wrote:Ok, Sorya is one of the largest bus companies in Cambodia - they have some new buses as well as some total wrecks. I go by bus quite a bit in Thailand and I’m sure I will be okay on that journey with Sorya
but we are spoilt perhaps a bit because here I would only ever use NCA.

Yeah, you'll be fine. It's just no luxury bus or sleeper bus.

do you think Cambodians would pay a premium for a much higher standard bus ( as Thais do to travel on NCA) as described in this articleGeneral Mackevili wrote:Yeah, you'll be fine. It's just no luxury bus or sleeper bus.

Definitely, but I just don't think there's a market for it on this particular route.obelisks wrote:do you think Cambodians would pay a premium for a much higher standard bus ( as Thais do to travel on NCA) as described in this articleGeneral Mackevili wrote:Yeah, you'll be fine. On my last trip from Siem Reap to Bangkok, Thailand I was trying to book a fancy bus, and ended up having to downgrade to an el cheapo because the double prices fancy buses were all booked.
There have been many upgraded bus transport options to popular destinations over the last couple years and I think they are doing quite well. Tourists, expats and locals all seem to be choosing them over the cheapest options sometimes.

Re: Sorya company bus to Pakse in Laos
Latest move upmarket in Cambodian transport are "VIP" minivans - this means I person, 1 seat - and no chickens, bags of rice or motorbikes. Also (supposedly) it means that they leave on time whether or not they're full - however, it really goes against the grain for any minivan driver to leave with empty seats, even if the passengers are paying double the normal price to compensate.
You can actually get a VIP from PP as far as Stung Treng, but after that you'll have problems for sure. You'd probably have to change minivans twice from ST to Pakse - at the border at least, or they might even make you wait for the Sorya bus from PP - LOL. And there's no way of knowing when it will arrive in ST - you could wait there from 1-5 hrs.
(I'm not joking unfortunately.)
So yeah, IMO just get the Sorya bus ...
