19 Dead, 11 Missing in Flood-Hit Northern Vietnam
27/06/18 17:12
HANOI, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Floods and landslides caused by heavy rain over the weekend in Vietnam's northern mountainous provinces have claimed 19 human lives, left 11 local people missing, and injured 12 others, the country's Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control announced on Wednesday.

Among the dead people, 14 died in landslides, house collapses or flash floods in Lai Chau province, and five were killed in house collapses in Ha Giang province.

All the 11 people listed as missing by Wednesday morning were swept away by floods in Lai Chau.

As of Wednesday morning, the floods and landslides had also destroyed 124 houses and damaged 2,097 others, damaged 1,203 hectares of rice and other crops, killed 251 cattle and 5,919 fowls, swept away some bridges, and caused traffic congestions on many national and provincial roads.

Since the weekend, the flash floods and landslides in the seven northern provinces have caused property losses of some 443.8 billion Vietnamese dong (about 19.6 million U.S. dollars), said the committee.

It's flooding in Cambodia, but also in Vietnam, particularly in the northern regions near Hanoi. Take precautions if you plan to travel, because flooding is expected to continue.

Death toll in Vietnam flooding rises to 19
22 July 2018
HANOI: Flash floods in Vietnam have now claimed at least 19 lives, the government said on Sunday (Jul 22), as residents in affected areas sought safety in higher ground.

Boasting a long coastline, tropical Vietnam is battered by floods and storms every year, with hundreds of lives lost from the annual monsoon barrage.

The remnants of Typhoon Son Tinh, now a tropical depression, made landfall Wednesday night, the third tropical storm to hit Vietnam since the start of the year.

The latest report from the country's disaster office said 19 people have been killed so far, with an additional 13 people unaccounted for.

Floods and landslide from heavy rains have ranged far and wide and impacted rural and urban areas, including the capital Hanoi.
They are expected to continue in the coming days.
