SEA airports reaching saturation point as demand explodes.
Boom times crowd Southeast Asian skies
Regional carriers are poised to purchase a slew of new planes while airport authorities grapple with an unprecedented surge in passenger demand.
4 October 2017
Southeast Asia is expected to buy 10% of the world’s new jets over the next two decades, at a time when regional airports are already buckling under the strain of record flight volumes.
US aircraft manufacturer Boeing forecasts the seven biggest markets – Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Brunei and Vietnam, all members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) regional grouping – would need 4,210 airplanes, from a total global demand of 41,030, over the period.
Finding somewhere to put all these new planes, however, will not be easy. Every gateway airport in the region other than Kuala Lumpur will face either runway gridlock or saturated terminals by 2020, and there are even doubts that enough aircrew will be available: by 2035, Asia-Pacific airlines alone will need to hire 245,000 pilots...

Re: SEA airports reaching saturation point as demand explodes.
Airports in Vietnam are a mess. I flew through HCMC, Ha Noi, and Da Nang in the last month and all of them were crowded like heck.

UK airports are always a mess.

It's gonna be interesting to see how the new Koh Kong airport near Kiri Sakor and the new SR airport develop and work out...

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Great airport - far superior to those back in the UK for timing.

Fed up with flight delays in Asia? Blame the airports
Growth in the number of airports in Southeast Asia has failed to keep up with a surge in demand by passengers.
by Michael Tatarski
6 Feb 2019
Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam - You've endured the long queues at check-in and immigration; patiently sat on the floor of a packed departure hall after being informed of a delay to your flight; before eventually being told to walk across a baking tarmac to your plane.
For many passengers daily, this is the reality of flying around parts of Southeast Asia, where growth in the number of airports and related infrastructure has failed to keep up with a surge in demand. A mushrooming of regional budget airlines vying for limited take-off and landing slots at these airports is making competition among carriers fiercer than ever and raising safety concerns. But new technologies promise to alleviate at least some of the pain in the short term.
Nowhere in Southeast Asia are these problems more acute than in Vietnam, the region's fastest-growing civilian aviation hub.
The number of passengers travelling through its airports has grown on average by 16 percent every year since 2010, hitting 94 million last year, up from 25 million in 2012, according to the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), a research firm.
But Vietnam has completed just two new airports since 1975. A replacement for Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat facility - Vietnam's largest airport - has been discussed for years, but construction has yet to begin.
Meanwhile, the rest of Southeast Asia isn't far behind in terms of growth in demand for flights. CAPA says the number of passengers across the region is growing by around 10 percent a year. Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and the Philippines are all experiencing double-digit expansion rates.
Unlike Vietnam, some of its neighbours are growing their airport capacity. Singapore will open additional facilities at Changi International Airport this year, with another terminal planned beyond that, while a $5.3bn project is under way to expand capacity at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport from 45 million passengers annually to 125 million by 2024.
