Road from Phnom Penh to Kep?
Re: Road from Phnom Penh to Kep?
My mate just did the trip to SNK on the train last Sunday. 7:00am on the dot out of PP, 11:15 into Kep, 13:35 into SNK.Marty wrote: ↑Wed Feb 17, 2021 11:03 amYes correct, took 8 hours last time I used it and the train even backed in reverse on some stretches!Jerry Atrick wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 4:39 pmI cannot reccomend train for this journey.Doc67 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 8:37 am You can go on the train too, thus avoiding all these suicide alleys. You can take your bike too, it goes in a cargo wagon on the back of the train.
It's about 4 hours to Kampot, you get to see the countryside, it has AC and has a buffet outlet (take your own food is my advice) It stops once in Takmeo. From Kampot you can then take a leisurely drive to Kep and satisfy your wild biker spirit needs.
Trains leave PP at 7am, on Friday/Saturday/Sunday and return to PP at 11am on Saturday/Sunday/Monday. $7 pp each way.
Let the train take the strain! (and eliminate the risk of death or serious injury too)

It's shit and takes nearer to seven hours. The distance is 155km!!!
I know you can get delays on the train and it could take an extra 2 hours, but on the road you can get killed and that will cause an even bigger delay.
Plus the stress of the drive. Plus the cost of the drive.
Next time I go to Kep, it's gonna be on the train.

No stress for me doing 45 -50kmh 4 x beer stops less than $5 petrol and have the bike to get around once I'm here. Would love to do the train one day they are a great way to travel if only going for week or few days
I'm standing up, so I must be straight.

The train stops in both Kampot and Kep... But the Kep station is north of 33... a bit out of town... If you transport your bicycle or moto during weekends, on Saturday coming from PP, or Sunday, leaving from Sihanoukville, you can get off anywhere you like with it...

Yeah, like you'll need to ride like 10km to town... Not exactly central. So ticket $7+bike $5 for a trip that takes hours longer and would be way cheaper going on your own.
Cheaper and easier on your own two wheels, even if you take your sweet ass time at a safe/relaxed pace (stopping whenever you feel like it, sightseeing, etc). I did the trip three times and don't think I'd ever do it again. It's a crap shoot how long it takes, so I don't like playing the lottery with my time. Fun the first time though if you're with a group of people.

The train ride from Kampot to PP is really scenic in the early part of the journey. Instead of continuous ribbon development on the road, you are cutting straight through undeveloped terrain. Lovely to see.
Re: Road from Phnom Penh to Kep?
Most definitely agree with you there, that uninterrupted scenery is well worth that train journey alone, so easy to put your luggage on the train. Take the bike so you have your own transportation at any time you wish, also get nice and comfy in the carriage with aircon for additional comfort.armchairlawyer wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 12:28 pm The train ride from Kampot to PP is really scenic in the early part of the journey. It's possible to have the best of both worlds, by using the train, and your bike when ever you feel like it.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

We went on the train, from sihoukville to phom phenn, about 3 years ago, brilliant absolutely loved it. As everyone has said, scenery, air-conditioning, and lots of room to move around in. Next time we travel to phom phenn (don't know bloody when),we will be going on the train to kampot
