It will require careful planning though, given the Cambodian exit visa, the time to obtain one, and its' validity. Price is £100. He has to prove he resides in Thailand, but I guess that's the easiest part.

Nope, impossible. Apparently, he's on a Tourist Visa in Thailand, so I'm not sure just how much he does live there and why he's not more settled and established there. I think he needs to bite the bullet and apply for a replacement and wait it out. I helped a bloke in the bar with the forms etc a while ago. He applied on 27th Feb and got it back on 6th of April, which is a huge improvement over last year.

on a tourist visa he does not live in Thailand, he is a tourist

best bet is stay in Cambodia, go on overstay till he gets a new passport or get a travel/replacement and head home

NOTE; even if he gets back to thailand, his tourist visa expired the minute he departed the country, UNLESS which I seriously doubt, he got a re entry permit
BUT as his passport is gone, so is the visa.

The UK passport processing times amaze me. Truly a failed state, but with prices fit for an empire of former glory. This must be causing severe problems for countless Brits who are unfortunate enough to lose their passports while abroad. Why does nobody hold those jokers who fail to produce passports within an acceptable time frame accountable?

Just for comparison, my last passport renewal took two weeks. And that includes sending my new passport all the way to Bangkok.

It is definitely worth considering a trip back to the UK around 6-9 months from the expiry of a UK passport - you can get a same day service at the Post Office, or a quick day or two turnaround if you're willing to pay the right bribe, ahem, expedition fee. Tick the 'family visit' box along the way, job done. Overseas however is a horror show.

I've had to do three UK passports in my time here (not all mine!), first was via official route/VFS Global which took forever; and the last two I sent all documents via courier direct to the passport office with a return address of a family member in the UK. This was processed much faster & also the courier delivery for the return only a day or so. As live passports won't be touched by couriers, you will need to find a creative way to put your Lego instructions inside the sealed box so that your kids know how to put it all back together, ahem. End to end about 3-4 weeks all going well, and kids love Lego fox Xmas. If you have older kids, Meccano sets also have intruction manuals!

I did one recently for someone, it took from 27/2 to 6/4 so less than 6 weeks, which was a big surprise.

My one took 12 weeks between October and December last year.

HMPO have been on strike too, so who knows what the turnaround time is now, plus holiday season is approaching.
