amazing, is it 15days? ive never been to vietnam or the philippines so thinking of doing a little trip and getting them both done, will travel over land to vietnam spend a couple of weeks down there, then fly to manila flights are only $100 return! will probs get the return flight back to cambodia though

Looks like not many people are using them. People prefer Cambodia and Thailand for more fun, comfort and relaxation.

Tourism operators, once again, also claimed that the recent visa waiver policy is a strong example of how Vietnam’s government is not very keen on supporting the industry.
The government has offered visa waivers to only a few countries and their nationals are only allowed to stay for 15 days.

Travel companies said they have spent more than ten years campaigning for more favorable visa rules so that Vietnam can compete against Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, which all offer visa waivers to up to 100 countries.

They said Vietnam is late in the competition, and it has done a poor job in making them stay or come back.

Tuoi Tre reported that many first-time tourists said they would not return. Their common reasons are poor environment hygiene and public safety; unreasonable prices for several services such as street food and taxi; and boring destinations, which make the tours not worth it.

You'll see that they have no idea what tourism is all about, as they try to mix in information about religious freedom, investment opportunities and the economy as well.

Here's the latest (mis)information regarding visas for Viet Nam, complete with a photo of tourists looking bored out of their skulls:

Again, you'll notice that, in general, Vietnamese have no idea what international tourism is about, as illustrated by articles like this:

They forgot to add the unforgettable photo of the BBQed dog, which would also go down well with tourists.

Before and after shots are always a winner - here's Fido at play, now he's cooking, here he is smoking, and he likes to be served with rice and vegetables.

However, that smoked buffalo/pork meat looks good. Better than what I've had in Cambodia so far - always too dry. I haven't been to the smoked meat place in Sihanoukville yet, but that's "foreign" smoking and not traditional. (Wat, no buffalo ?)

Interesting news for those who want to visit Vietnam and the region. At $25 the standard Vietnam visa would be cheaper than the tourist visa for Cambodia.

Vietnam will cut the standard visa fee for visitors from US$45 to $25 on November 23, a move that comes amid efforts to reverse a slump in foreign arrivals.
For a multi-entry visa valid for three months, the fee will be $50, down from the current $95, the finance ministry announced on its website on Tuesday.
Fees for visas with longer terms will range from $95 to $155 for validity of up to five years.

BUT, I cannot find any official source from the Vietnam govt to confirm this online. Anybody ?

VIetnam doesn't work that way.That's why I used the phrase "(mis)information".

Information in Vietnam is a kind of commodity that is not fully available to just anybody. So, what you read on the internet or hear from somebody may or may not be "true" and is subject to change. So, don't be surprised when you go to the embassy or travel agent and they quote a totally different price, one which is generally not lower than you expect.

Hadn't thought about it like that. No wonder it's hard to find out exactly what is happening with visas.
Silly me to think that because it was published in a newspaper it would be fact-checked. Is Tanh Nien News a government voice then ?
And why do they think that announcing false reductions in visa prices will encourage tourism ?

Thanh Nien is the flagship publication of the Vietnam National Youth Federation.

Anyway, just because it's not "true" doesn't mean it's "false". That would be "disinformation", not "misinformation".

The Uncertainty Principle/Maybe Logic has to be applied in VN with varying degrees of probability rather a simple black&white model.

So, the point is that the "official" cost is unavailable and until you get to the embassy and actually enquire there, you won't actually know what the cost of a visa is.
