Very very easy, just spent 13 days up there, stayed in thamel, bhaktapur, nagarkot and patan.never paid more than $20/night for good room.
Food, nepali set meal $4-6, other meals never more than $5., large beer $4-5, thing is many average restaurants tag on another 24% tax!!!!!
Its my first trip back since 1999 and very dissapointed. Traffic terriable, roads terriable, tourism way down from what it was in the 90's. The city has really expanded.
Lots of earthquake damage still not repaired. Speaking with tibeatan an nepali friends and they all agree it was better 20 years ago.

I'll do my own write up with photos in a couple of weeks.
Fwiw i'd suggest anyone do Burma before Nepal, unless ur going on a trek.

I'll just ad it can be done cheaper than pr's numbers but it depends on your standards of course. Large beers can be bought at mom and pop shops in and around Thamel for $2.50 (no tax), and there are many small local style eateries where a meal of momos or fried rice can be had for under $2, four large samosas with sauce will cost a dollar....A clean small single room with fast wifi and shared bathroom can be had for $4.....Nepal is still cheap, and it gets cheaper outside of the tourist areas.

yep, u can live cheaper. I dont drink beer and even if did wouldn't drink in my room
( 113 rps= $1)
momo's under 200 rps, Fried rice or noddle under 200 rps, Pizza 350-500 rps, American Chowmein 200-300 rps, spaghetti carbonara 350 rps, Chicken burger with fires & coke 270 rps, soft drinks 50-80 rps, Lassi 80-120rps....all no tax

Prices are for what i paid, I like my own bathroom, hot water, windows, clean...you can easily stay for under $10 a night if ur willing to give up some of these things.

My $20 room in Thamel ( with aircon, tv ( with international stations) & frig)

Example, great room in Bhaktapur $15, hot water, wifi, in the old town with windows overlooking a small lane and a great breakfast,with shared bathroom it would have been only $11.
In Patan, 2 blocks to durbar square, I had a studio apt with huge bedroom, windows, wifi & kitchen all for $19, his monthly rate was $300 and sure you could get him down to $250

My Ncell sim cost me $5.50 for the sim and 6 gigs of data as well:-)....Often faster then the hotels wifi...

NOTE: i paid over 55,000 rps total for admission tickets ( Kathmandu durbar square,Patan Durbar squre, Bhaktapur durbar sqaure, Monkey temple, Pashupatinath Temple , Boudhanath Stupa ++)

Taxi's average $1/km BUT Bus's VERY cheap;;;; (example Ktm- Bhaktapur) 15 kms 25 rps...

It's been a great couple of months strolling the small lanes and alleys of Kathmandu watching life and the lives of those that make this place such a unique destination to experience - I'll be forever returning here, I think, even if dodgy knees and dengue are part of the deal. With a flight back to Australia tonight I was looking through the photos from this trip and picked out a couple of my favorites. Thanks to everyone who had a look at the blog or commented etc.
