Exploring Cambodia and the Rest of South East Asia on a Cruise Ship (LA Times)
"Jim Kaiser was cooling off at a thatched-roof bar on the white-sand beach in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, when I struck up a conversation with him.
Like me, he was exploring Southeast Asia on a cruise. He would be in port only a day, but he was making the most of his time.
"There's so much to see in the world and too little time," said Kaiser, who lives in New Canaan, Conn. "A cruise helps you maximize the time you have."
Kaiser's weeklong cruise introduced him to Bangkok and Koh Samui, Thailand; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; and Singapore, where he embarked and from which he would fly home.

Lol, have you seen the itinerary for the Vietnam Cambodia cruise? Visit a temple in Oudong, go on an ox cart ride, then walk around PP.

not much to see or experience on a day shore leave, although have been told the ones that do the Caribbean are great.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

My Dad does these - they sound absolutely awful. You are at the mercy of the cruise company who sell you outrageously-priced "day trips" at each destination. There is no opportunity to go "off-piste" and no time to really see anything interesting.
I asked my Dad about his memories of Cambodia on a cruise - he said they moored at a beach (I assume Sihanoukville) and were immediately mobbed by hordes of cripples and amputees demanding money
He also did one to Brazil where lots of the passengers were mugged in Rio by organised gangs...obviously waiting on the elderly, clueless passengers disembarking.

We never did any group stuff on shore, but I guess that could vary. It was a few stops around the Caribbean and we just jumped off and found the nearest beaches each time.
Getting shit-faced on a big boat with a thousand strangers is a lot more fun than you might think.

I went on a Sinville cruise recently, $10/head, we had a great time, snorkelling, drinks ($1 beers, or bring your own), reasonable lunch, good staff, lovely people, some very nicely-filled small bikinis (I did object).
Great day. I did hear that one can hire the whole boat for $60/day, in which case one could presumably plan your own itinerary with a small group of friends
Actually, Sinville was lovely this time around, despite all the changes and the overpriced guesthouse...but even that had amazing ravioli and a lovely pool.
Not exactly a cruise ship, I know. Don't like crowds.

Jesus loves you...Mexico is great, right?
