A Day Out with the Locals at Kampi Rapids, Kratie

Kratie, Cambodia News: Wondering what else you can do in Kratie once you've seen the dolphins and the turtles ? Do as the locals do, and head off along the Mekong toward Sambor to the Kampi Rapids site. Every year in the dry season the water level on this arm of the Mekong drops sufficiently to create a shallow stretch of fast-moving water where local people like to cool off and hang out.

Once the water level drops, wooden platforms are constructed over the top of the rapids, with cool shady roofs, and there are hammocks and mats that can be rented by the hour. You can bring your own picnic, or there is plenty of food and drink available on site.

Kampi Rapids are a favorite place to cool off for Kratie families, and it's popular on the weekends with groups of young people who meet up there to drink beer, flirt with the opposite sex, and generally show off. It's a perfect spot for people-watching.

At the moment, the water levels are still high with enough water to have a proper swim, but over the next few months as the water level drops, the rapids are revealed. The water is clear and fast-moving, and more suitable for taking a dunk than actually swimming. The rocks are sometimes sharp and slippery, so this is not so much a relaxing swim as an energizing way to freshen up after a few beers. The usual method consists of flopping fully-dressed off your platform into the flowing water, while keeping a good grip on the platform poles to avoid getting swept away by the current.

A day out at Kampi rapids can be an interesting social experience for tourists. Everyone is very friendly, and this is a great way for visitors to meet and mingle with the locals as they enjoy their time off.

A note to foreign visitors: You'll notice that everyone is swimming in their clothes and if you want to enjoy a fully local experience, this is recommended. Otherwise you can wear swimming suits. As foreigners, you will get a few stares as par for the course, but girls wearing bikinis will get more curious gazes. It's not pervy, but people will stare. Kratie is a small Mekong town; most of the inhabitants have moved there fairly recently from nearby villages lost in the rice paddies, and they have relatively conservative dress standards. Half-naked foreigners will attract attention, but not hostility.
There are no changing rooms and no toilets at the site.

Balcony Guesthouse on Kratie riverfront organizes day trips to Kampi Rapids in a tuktuk with picnic lunch over the dry season.
