Cambodian Driving Licence
Re: Cambodian Driving Licence
No. Only a DL from the country of your passport can be converted.
Re: Cambodian Driving Licence
And unfortunately, it was not too long ago when they had a little reshuffle with the old driving laws and the outdated fines, and I seem to recall the government said the traffic police could keep somewhere around 70% of the fines imposed. There was now motive to fine traffic offender's stiffer higher fines. For the barang without a driving licence maybe very expensive, and could possibly also lose them the vehicle if they become heavy on the traffic laws.
It was also a change that Cambodia would now except an international driving permit, but useless to the long-term expat due to that option is only available in person from your own country.

Always "hope" but never "expect".

So if I get an IDP from Malaysia, I
should be safe? Or at least limited to tea money?

@Thorix
Awesome! Thank you very much for the info!
Is a business visa and a certain length of stay mandatory?
Is a special visa required for a thai license? Or will it work with a "tourist" visa?
I presume you don't have a thai citizenship!?
Is your license valid in SOME other ASEAN countries then? (Sry, your answer confuses me a little bit, presuming you don't hold a thai passport would mean you can't use your thai license!?
Also, can you give a QUICK info, how much your driver license cost, how long it took, and if it was easy or difficult!?
Also, any experiences with thai / khmer licenses, turning them into IDP, validity in other countries (especially EU or US, etc etc etc) would be VERY appreciated ...
I _DO_ know someone who made a thai license, got that turned into an IDP, went to EU, and transferred his IDP into a legit, valid, local license, just paperwork needed and a few bucks, no extra tests etc .....
It is centuries ago though and he did have a thai "resident" visa or something like that, and also did language tests for it ...
I have seen it with my own eyes, the original thai and the transfered IDP and EU license ...
Sorry if some of my specifics are a bit out of accuracy, sadly I was out of the game for 3 years, but I want to come back and do exactly what you folks did ...

I hold a valid 5 year Thai license valid till March 2027< ( you can get 6 out of a 5 year license if u apply the day after ur license expires) and although legally all ASEAN members can use their licenses in ASEAN countries, Cambodia doesn't accept it.
and NO you can ONLY use ur license from ur passport country
fuck em, i'd rather just pay the odd $5--10 if i am stopped than deal with it.

Re: Cambodian Driving Licence
As the OP is 2 years old and you may not get a reply, I will intervene to say that it is now extremely challenging to pass the Cambodian driving test as a foreigner. I know a very good driver who passed at the fourth attempt. It is easy however to use your home country license to get a 1 year Khmer one.daiquiri wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 8:49 pm @Thorix

Richard may say more about the Thai license but I can say that you need more than a tourist visa and you need a residence certificate.
I have used my Cambodian license in Thailand with no problems.

Re: Cambodian Driving Licence
Thai license you can do easily
3 weeks ago I applied with a visa exempt entry for my motorcycle license an of course you need the residence certificate and a medical certificate ( How old are you, weight an height, 100 baht)
Problem was my appt for the test ( since i dont have a motorcycle license ) is feb 16th
My 5 year Thai license is valid in ALL ASEAN countries, you can get a IDP in Thai with a thai license if you desire although i have used my thai license all over ASEAN< Europe and the states
Total cost is 505 baht, if you dont have any license you need do a written and driving test an watch a video, brake/color test takes around 5 hours
if you hold a license only need watch a video, brake and color test 3 hours
Biggest problem is cause of covid in PHUKET and they are backed up ( but some areas you can do it in a day Krabi))
If ur in a huge rush there are agents offering "fast service and guaranteed" pass ) for 10,000 baht

Re: Cambodian Driving Licence
To elaborate on what Richard wrote, the problem with obtaining a Thai DL as a tourist isn't the visa as such, but the residence certificate. Some immigration offices give residence certificates to people on visa exempt and tourist visa entries (e.g. Phuket and Jomtien), others don't (most notably, Bangkok).
For a new Thai DL, there's otherwise no difference, it's always valid for 2 years. For a renewal, it's usually valid for 5 years, but if you don't have a non-immigrant visa entry, a renewal would be for 2 years only. So a tourist effectively has to renew a Thai DL every 2 years.

and as an added note if you renew the day after it expires, it's good for almost 3/6 years>Alex wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 12:39 pm To elaborate on what Richard wrote, the problem with obtaining a Thai DL as a tourist isn't the visa as such, but the residence certificate. heres the thing,
stopped in Thailand ....no license ( phuket) 1,000 baht ( license cost 505 baht for almost 3 years)
stopped in Cambodia .....no license $10-20 ( license cost $35/year)

Re: Cambodian Driving Licence
I strongly disagree with this. If you are a competent driver in your home country, and can operate a vehicle and have some level of spacial awareness for the parking tasks, the test is simple. You're not even on the open road. There are no unexpected occurrences to deal with. If you speak a little Khmer, and can politely chat with the staff, even better. Choose to do the test in a manual car and you'll also get priority. The majority choose automatic transmission.armchairlawyer wrote:

I Also disagree with the comment somewhere above that the theory questions relating to priority at junctions make no sense. It absolutely makes sense. Same as in any other country. What happens in reality on the roads is very different, but in theory, the rules are totally appropriate and logical.
Coming to Cambodia and learning to drive would be a challenge. But if you have driving experience elsewhere, passing the test here is an inconvenience but by no means something that should require 5 attempts.
