it gets cheaper-- like 1500 RT but that is with a long layover of about 15 or 20 hours. that is crazy.
i have found NYC-PP for approx 1750 RT leaving early/mid june til end of August

super frustrating but no choice. I will not go because of prices but wish was less expensive. It was cheaper flying during covid. Obv the prices may go down and its early but not liking what i am seeing at the moment
Have you considered Medellin, Colombia? Seriously!

Night life will be better. Food will be better, loose women aplenty, climate is WAY better and it's cheap for beer, transport and accommodation.

OK, you won't get 75c beers while sitting outside on a plastic chair, but I know you're a bit classier than that.

And.....it's a 7 hour journey including a 55m layover in Fort Lauderdale for a mere $584.

They only downside is the security concerns, but hey, you're from Brooklyn so you have big city street smarts.

If you haven't been, give it some thought.

You forgot to mention the "snow" will be better.. lol.. I think you mentioned that area before. When was last time you went?

I will look into it .. thanks and i have never been before. I would have to buckle up if going for 2 months. the whole apartment thing etc

what neighborhood specifically you recommend in Medellin? i will look it up for sure. I would have to stay at a guest house for a few days while looking for apartment. do they do similar as in cambodia where you can find 2 month rentals?
i am all set up w/ Cambodia and know all the ins/outs.. going to Medellin would be like starting from scratch again.
I went this year. To be honest, it wasn't for me for a number of reasons: the entertainment section was too crowded and too loud and nobody seems to come out until after 9pm. None of that works for me. However, I seem to remember that's exactly the time you start thinking about going out, so this will suit you. And you like Pontoon, so Parque Lleras in El Poblado will suit you perfectly as it is loud and raucous. And there are lots of Americans there so you will meet kindred spirits. And a Hooters that you could probably get a 'takeaway' from, if you catch my drift.

El Pobado is the go-to area for first-timers in Medellin, there are lots of sources for information. Stay to the area to the west of Parque Lleras, ideally between the North/South running Carrera 43A and between Carrera 10 and 7D. This is a quieter area and on the way to the metro station so you will be well positioned. The streets are easy, it's essentially a grid system. Be warned, this area is very hilly, so before choosing accommodation, check out street view and see if you are perched on a 500ft climb at a 1/6 ratio.

As I said, the only serious downside is the safety aspect, but if you take sensible precautions and leave your bling at home, you should survive in one piece. How much sketchier can it be than New York?

If you are seriously going to consider it, and you should, I have a few resources I can share with you (not for publication on here!)
Thanks so much for the info and your thoughts. Crazy but i don't care for Pontoon anymore. I have still gone but doesn't do it for me like it used too. but your correct with everything else and prefer to go out on the later side. Thanks so much man. Appreciate it.

I am gonna marinate with all the info you gave me. I think it would make sense to make a smaller trip first. Don't allocate 2 months for my first time if I go.

anyway thanks man. I need some coffee.. woke up on late side today. lol. I really appreciate it

hey was rereading your post. NYC is no where near as sketchy as it used to be. Maybe i don't see it because I am from here but midtown is now like Disney WOrld. lol I live in Brooklyn and maybe there are 3 areas that are still what i would consider "bad" or havent changed but for the most part, I think its a reputation from the past.

i am coming now for the 9th year here, located in belgium, i flew out of AMS-DUS-BRU-CDG-BCN and VLC. Its all relative the same price. A stopover in BKK or SGN can make the flight a little cheaoer, but if you count the money you spend there on local transport, hotels etc, its the same price. I changed my summer-flights from late july to early august and that works a little. Just be flexible on dates, fly on a tuesday, avoid fridays. My best options always came out with momondo.be, a search-machine who redirects you to another website !! Xiamen-air has acheap and good conection with PNH, i booked a flight in september but it was canceled due to a tyfoon in Xiamen-airport. STill waiting for refund !! Transiting China is chepaer, but check out all the paperwork you need for just transiting !!

OP can try to pick mnl n then reconnect. Mnl has cheap tiks now but maybe not from your destination also philip aline suks in reliability. then again u traveling with 4 so less connections less drama...

Hmmm.. my u can try yo location to a big transit hub in EU n then connect from there.. kul and bkk will have the cheap connectors to pnh bc of air asia

Good luk
was rereading and wanted to ask about Qatar Airlines. I never used them before but at the moment seem to be the least expensive inluding layovers under 6 hours. Has anyone else used Qatar? if so,...good/bad/ugly? The reviews seem to be really good but wanted to ask people on this forum

I always fly Qatar, fantastic airline, especially their Business Class Q-Suites. Now that they have resumed direct flights DOH-PNH there is no need to transit through BKK, just a 1.5hr technical stop in SGN to let passengers off/on, if you're flying to PNH you don't get off the plane so no fluffing around.

Thanks so much. Yes I noticed about not getting off the plane. They do something similar w/ Singapore. Actually maybe not similar because in Frankfurt you do get off plane but its for short time period.

In economy though, not getting off the plane is a bit of a problem IMHO. I'd rather be walking around if we're not flying.

@armchairlawyer I've done it in economy plenty, you can still stretch your legs walking around the plane, it's only 90 minutes and the time goes surprisingly quick, before descending speak nicely to the hostesses and get yourself some extra drinks to pass the time, they are very accommodating. I prefer spending 90 mins waiting on the plane rather than having to transit through BKK.

Not mentioned about Medellin is anything about knowing Spanish. I went 10 years back so my experience may well not reflect the current situation but when I was there nobody, and I mean nobody spoke English. Something to consider. Can be damn frustrating.
