Myanmar’s biggest airport closed after Chinese-made military plane skids off runway

Myanmar’s largest airport was forced to close temporarily after a military plane skidded off the runway, forcing inbound international flights to be diverted, an official at the civil aviation department said on Thursday.

A Chinese-made Y-8-200F transport plane slid off the runway at Yangon International Airport in the morning after one of its engines failed, according to a government statement.

There were no injuries reported, but outbound flights were delayed and inbound flights suspended

Vietnam Airlines secures first license for direct US flights

HANOI: Vietnam Airlines has become the first carrier in the country to secure a coveted license to fly direct to the United States, according to the airline and a regulatory filing seen by AFP.

The approval has for months been sought by Vietnamese carriers eager to exploit a fast-growing market for air travel among Vietnam's booming middle class.

Vietnam Airlines has been licensed to fly from Hanoi and the southern business hub Ho Chi Minh City to Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Seattle and Dallas, according to a regulatory filing from the US Department of Transportation obtained by AFP.

Thai AirAsia Airbus A320 Returns To Male With Engine Troubles

The Aviation Herald reported today on an engine incident aboard a Thai AirAsia flight from Malé International Airport in the Maldives, to Bangkok, Thailand. The aircraft in question was a 6.8-year-old ex-Indonesia AirAsia Airbus A320, registered HS-BBT.

Passengers were met with a terrifying sight during the aircraft’s initial ascent, as a series of loud bangs were heard and flames began to streak from one of its engines. The crew stopped the ascent at just 5,000 feet, shut down the affected engine, and returned to Malé.

There have been a number of similar incidents over the past couple of months. The most recent came just two days ago when a TAP Air Portugal Airbus A320 experienced an engine explosion whilst accelerating down the runway. The incident was caught on camera, including the quick response of the airport firefighting team.

Cambodia requests help to improve aviation sector

Cambodia has solicited the assistance of Korea and several other countries to improve its aviation sector.This week, Minister of Aviation Mao Havanall met with Park Sun-ho, Korea’s deputy minister for infrastructure and transport, to discuss possible areas of cooperation.

During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the 7th Global Infrastructure Cooperation Conference in Seoul, Mr Havanall asked the Koreans to assist in several areas, including improving the Civil Aviation Training Center (CATC), according to a post on the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation’s official Facebook page.CATC is mainly used to train personnel responsible for air traffic control and airport security. It was established two years ago with assistance from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (Koica).

In addition to inadequate facilities, the local aviation industry lacks qualified personnel to man air traffic control and other critical facilities.

British Airways strike sees fares skyrocket

This week's British Airways strike has caused chaos for an estimated 280,000 passengers who were due to fly with the airline.But it has also rocketed up fares to destinations around the world by up to 2,100 per cent, leaving the UK isolated amid sold-out routes and stratospherically priced flights.

A return flight this week from London to Nice, in the South of France, costs as much as £1,272 (AUD$2,228) for less than two hours in the air. That was the price offered on Monday morning for an easyJet flight departing London Gatwick Monday evening, and returning Wednesday morning. Returning Tuesday cost a little less, at £1,055 (AUD$1,900).

The cheapest return flight on Wednesday, September 11 was £448.50 (AUD$806) one-way. Meanwhile, British Airways was charging £694 (AUD$1248) for a Nice-London Heathrow flight on Wednesday evening, as it struggles to get back on schedule.
British Airways is selling return fares to Nice on other dates in September for £58 (AUD$104) - making this week's flights nearly 22 times as expensive.

China's futuristic $11.5b 'Starfish' airport opens

Beijing (CNN) — China is poised to open a new mega-airport to the south of Beijing, already home to the world's second-busiest aviation hub, ahead of the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic.
Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) will see its first commercial flight take off around September 20, according to Chinese state media, with main tenant China Southern planning to deploy an Airbus A380, the world's biggest airliner, for the maiden journey.

The multibillion-dollar Daxing, designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid and her Chinese partners, is built for the future, boasting four runways and a terminal the size of 97 soccer pitches upon opening of the first phase -- as well as customer-service robots that will provide travelers with flight updates and airport information.
