Allegedly Certain Nationals Must Show $1000 Cash to Fly to Cambodia

Do you have a Cambodian trip report you want to share? Post it here, and feel free to link to your blog if it's a travel blog for Cambodia, South East Asia, or anywhere really. You can ask and answer questions about travel advice in Cambodia or just share your pictures and videos with us. Most people who live in or visit Cambodia have also checked out nearby countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, and you can get to most of these countries by traveling overland, so put any travel plans, reviews or questions here. Discussions about dirt bike trails in here as well.

There is no such official, published, policy, never has been. Immigration officers inconsistently apply this unofficial "showing sufficient funds in cash" policy to travellers from South Asia, Middle East, Africa, etc. For years we have been receiving reports in the Visa group from travellers who have been denied check-in or denied entry on arrival because of this, it is nothing new, however this is the first time anything has been reported in the media about it.

If the DoI want to apply such a policy, they should do so officially, and publicise it.

Why Indian, a country with 750,000 millionaires and not, say, Europe where many of the backpackers that end up begging at traffic lights come from?
Oh yes, I see Indian millionaires every day on Riverside. Funny how they come in on building worker permits.

I would trust the Cambodian government's judgment on this. They know the facts. There will be a reason for this. I don't expect the Indian government to complain.

I remember reading some cases of Indian workers being offered building work here by brokers in India. They did not have the correct paperwork and so on arrival, things didn't work out as planned.
Right, and I see German, British, French, whatever millionaires everywhere as well. Sound logic.

I would hope it doesn’t become a ‘norm’. Like Alex, and many, I have bank accounts in Cambodia, and now only maintain limited banking outside. To get US$ would be a pain when travelling from some places. Near impossible in others.
I think flashing a local bank card (or multiple in your case) in your name will open the gates.

Not defending these random checks, but personally with the Cambodian bank cards in my name I wouldn't worry about my chance to get in.

That's not what is happening. For these nationals they have to show cash. Carrying a few hundred dollars for emergencies is normal enough, carrying $1000 seems like an unnecessary risk. It's 2022, most people use cards. :?

I cannot find it but wasn't this topic discussed a few years back on CEO? I believe at that time there was also no official published policy but the claim was that Cambodia immigration was requiring, without notice, that some visitors from certain African countries were denied entry unless they could show a large amount of cash. I cannot remember the amount needed at that time.

There was a previous case of an African woman reported on CEO. In 2019, a lady from Kenya was asked to show US$2000 cash to get on a flight from Bangkok to Phnom Penh. She was refused boarding by the Thais and got sent home.

Average western tourist spending is about $1000 a week for most vacation spots.

From Bankrate:

“The average cost of a one-week vacation in the U.S. for one person is $1,558. The average cost for a one-week vacation in the U.S. for two people is $3,116. “

Tourist visa is 1 month. Not out of expectations for a western tourist on 1 month tourist visa to bring $1000 to spend.

Probably why the competent authorities don’t bother to check western tourists.

Pretty sure that westerns in elephant pajama pants, who drink beer in a front of 7/11 in Thailand or here and sleeping in a 7$ dormitories dont spend 1000$ a week.

I bet India resents giving Cambodia all that vaccine :D

I wonder if Sri Lanka is on that list. Given the financial chaos in Sri Lanka and the very real chance of a complete economic collapse, I wouldn't be surprised if Sri Lankans lost all rights to enter, even on T visas, like the Nigerians.
