Wonderful Pictures Of South Wales During The 1970s

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

My mother came from the Valleys of South Wales, but at fourteen she was alone and working full time in Cardiff. Yes! life could be hard for many, and a few years just before the time you are quoting my farther had passed away and a few hard years were to come our way. being in Yorkshire there was work on the farms, potato picking for ten hours per day for just over a quid, no joke or easy task for a scrawny seven year old. No Khmer would believe the stories of westerners having any hardship.
But, Mishmash I managed to work and buy that Chopper Bike.
Picking them spuds must have been really tough. And for a quid too!

I worked in the wholesalers stacking fucking bags of the stuff at the weekends, but I could sit down when they were done.

Whenever a wagon arrived from a farm, it was my worst nightmare so I understand your pain.

The paper round was a doddle compared to that, except in winter.

Locals don't believe it here when I tell them I wore clogs up to age 7 - seriously

They find it difficult to believe that people in the UK were poor not so long ago and many still are.

I wish Cambodia well as it rebuilds and develops.

back when I was a boy.

That's the bit that I find hard to believe . :stir:
November 9 1962

So I'm past the average expat death age here.

I ponder that and crack a beer to celebrate - every day above ground is a good day... :beer3:

I thought clogs were wooden shoes and only worn by the dutch ? Anyway it sounds like you were very rich as in the 1950's when I started school 1952 I had no shoes. When I did get some and the sole wore out , newspapers were inserted inside to keep the ground from coming through.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Clogs were leather uppers with wooden soles and metal inserts.

1952 no shoes, you were poor indeed.

Some parts of Cambodia are like back in your time Duncan, so you know the struggle can be won.

As a side note ,, the photos was taken by my uncle who was a amateur photographer. He had his own dark room and after taking a photo on 35 mm film , and developing it,, he would put some paper through a chemical process which made it light sensitive. When it was dry the photo on the film was projected onto the paper then put through an other chemical process which showed the actual photo. Some of his first photos that he developed were on ordinary pad writing paper and you can see the lines in some photos. In earlier days the light sensitive paper was put straight into a camera and before
that it was all done on glass and I still have some of those. He also developed his own 8 mm movies . This was all in the 1950's.

He was a caretaker at a swimming pool and trained many competitive swimmers and divers by taking movies of them underwater then developing it to show the swimmers and divers what they were doing wrong under the water.

Great photos, thanks for sharing.

NZ looks a tough country with some great scenery.

I had butter from NZ on my toast in front of the coal fire when we graduated to owning a shop back in the days.

I can remember the taste well.

And we had NZ Lamb too - still my favorite meat ever in the world.

As an aside I was disappointed when the UK chose the EU over Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
