Rohingya insurgents declare temporary ceasefire amid humanitarian crisis
BANGKOK/COX‘S BAZAR, Bangladesh (Reuters) - Rohingya insurgents declared a month-long unilateral ceasefire, starting on Sunday, to enable aid groups to help ease a humanitarian crisis in northwest Myanmar.
Nearly 300,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh and 30,000 non-Muslim civilians have been displaced inside Myanmar after the military launched a counter-offensive following attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) insurgents on 30 police posts and an army base on Aug. 25.

.....On Friday, the United Nations in Bangladesh found tens of thousands of refugees who had not been counted before, raising the count to 270,000 from some 164,000 the day before. On Saturday, that jumped by another 20,000 to 290,000.

Critics circle Aung San Suu Kyi over Rohingya crisis
World leaders, NGOs and fellow peace prize winners speak out over Aung San Suu Kyi's response to the Rohingya crisis.

Just one of many:
Peter Popham, biographer of two books about the life and work of Kyi, has called on Aung San Suu Kyi to resign.
Citing her decision in December 2011 to abide by Myanmar's constitution, which provides the army a "right to take over all powers of government whenever they feel it’s necessary", Popham labelled her situation "desperate" in an opinion piece published by The Independent on September 8.
"Instead of challenging the military, she is now its poodle, its patsy, its flak-catcher in chief. Senior general Min Aung Hlaing - responsible for operations against the Rohingya - is off the hook," he wrote.

shocking;
this is over 1/3rd of the total Rohnigya's that were in Myanmar
Relief efforts are max'd out yet more and more cross the border daily.
and still Myanmar refuses to allow independent observers in to let the world know a genocide is going on.

ReutersU.N. says 370,000 flee Myanmar, exodus continuing
GENEVA (Reuters) - Violence in Myanmar has prompted 370,000 people belonging to the Muslim Rohingya minority to flee to Bangladesh since Aug. 25, up from a previous estimate of 313,000, the U.N. International Organization for Migration said on Tuesday.
"The system is clearly at full stretch and needs all the support it can get," IOM chief spokesman Leonard Doyle said. He declined to say how big he thought the exodus could get.
"Clearly the estimates have been bypassed several times over," he told a briefing in Geneva. "I’m reluctant to give a number but obviously people fear that it could go much higher."

I am not defending her but all Aung San can do is speak up. The country is still run by the military and don't forget that most Myanmar do not have much love lost foe the Rohingya. Aung San will not make many friends domestically if she speaks out against the violence.
Let's see what she has to say at the UN today.

its her call;
do what is "Morally" correct
or what is "Politically"
what she says, even though she is not in control of her country, carries a huge weight worldwide.

End of the day, all politicians cater to the domestic market, and the next elections, first.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Tue Sep 19, 2017 8:48 am its her call;

And call me a cynic but the Rohingya are just flavor of the month. Where is the international condemnation of the refugee crisis in Kenya? Why does nobody hear about the thousands and thousands of Burundians still displaced in Tanzania?

Actually, some would say that the country is run by China.

And Australia is urging Rohingya in camps on PNG to go home. One lost his whole family last week, another says he will go home to die with his family. The Burmese Army have been fighting other ethnic groups for 50 years. The tribes in the mountains have held them off for that long despite enduring unspeakable atrocities.
The British sold out the non Burmese people post WW2, of course. Arakan as it was know then or Rakhine should have been part of Bangladesh. A sliver down the side of the country just like the sliver of Burma down the west coast of the Thai peninsular.
The British Indian Army fought a difficult war on the swamps of Arakan, the Rohingya supported us. Most of the British Indian army were moslem or sikh. We couldn't trust those hindus like we couldn't trust the Burmese or the Malays.
It's been pointed out that there were no Indians in the Dunkirk movie despite there being lots of them in France.
That horrible woman's father was a japanese sympathiser of course, I am glad he was blown up. When I went to Burma I was told that they hated the "Indians". Then I saw the mosques and realised the "Indians" were Bengalis.
Burma and Sri Lanka both have awful activist monks with no regard for the lives of non buddhists.

Aung San Suu Kyi says Myanmar does not fear scrutiny over Rohingya crisis
Tuesday 19 September 2017 06.44 BST
- Aung San Suu Kyi has broken her silence on the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, delivering a speech denounced as a “mix of untruths and victim-blaming” by Amnesty International.
In her first public address since a bloody military crackdown on the Rohingya Muslim minority that has been branded “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing” by the United Nations, the Nobel laureate did not criticise the army and said she did not “fear international scrutiny”.
“I’m aware of the fact that the world’s attention is focused on the situation in Rakhine state. As a responsible member of the community of nations Myanmar does not fear international scrutiny,” she said.
“There have been allegations and counter-allegations … We have to make sure those allegations are based on solid evidence before we take action,” she said in her speech from the capital, Naypyidaw.
She insisted there had been “no conflicts since 5 September and no clearance operations” against the country’s Muslim minority, a point disputed by those who have fled the violence...
