Uvalde Texas Mass Shooting

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to do what you can to prevent mentally ill people from arming themselves up then?

No reasonable person would think it's a good idea to let a drunk person drive, or to give a pedo a job teaching kids, or to let someone with terrible eyesight drive a fuel tanker ... why would anyone think letting mentally unstable people buy guns is in any way sensible?

The year with most dead the last 10 years was 2017, well before Covid. And it also doesn't explain why there are not a lot of mass shootings in other countries.

What type of society thinks a person can’t have sexual relations but they can own assault rifles?

I said sexual relations - I meant drink alcohol.
(The two must be closely associated in my mind)

Laws don’t stop all criminal behaviour but they do help temper it. And if introducing things such as banning assault rifles and needing tighter requirements to sell and buy privately, and to buy from stores isn’t enough - make the repercussions harsher.
A threat of death if trafficking drugs in some countries doesn’t stop all the fools but it does reduce the behaviour. Not that I am suggesting a death sentence.

I do think mental health issues need to be dealt with too. I was reminded that people often can’t afford their medications in the USA, there is a shortage of mental health professionals, and people can’t afford sessions.

lack of access to affordable medication and mental health support does contribute to why there are a lot of mass shootings in USA but not other countries.
It's not the full picture, but surely it's a vital component? I'm not saying it's more important than removing access to assault weapons and tightening up on private sales etc. but imho it shouldn't be written off as not important.

On the subject of Gun reforms and the NRA, here’s a quote from a news article about the current convention-
One attendee said she has struggled with the debate over gun reform as both a Texas gun owner and a grandmother of 13.

"I struggle with that a lot," Teresa Wakefield, of Houston, told ABC News Friday while browsing the floor of the gun show.

The way the debate is handled, i have a feeling the republicans are gonna fight pedophilia by lowering the majority to 7 years old, one day or another.

Being an American citizen sounds a lot like being raped in the ass but having the stitches refunded by the social security. Still hurts though.

...To talk over things like mental illness or the small details of gun regulations avoids discussion of effective SOLUTIONS... There is only ONE sure way forward: guns must be made illegal in America. The only question is "when" will this inevitable day come?

Reading this thread sometimes reminds me of what a discussion among confederate slave owners in the deep south of the United States would have sounded like sometime around 1827 or so. My meaning being that: maybe it will take 30 more years or 180 more years.... But one day, I am positive, everyone in America and around the world will concur that guns are simply dangerous and useless, and so, all guns will be made illegal.

Guns are nothing better than surplus and unnecessary items of material consumption. A spoiled society is compelled to buy more and more superfluity. That's all. It's a gargantuan corporate scam, and it's put over all the whole world...!

The utter silliness of some discussions on this topic in this thread is baffling. I see a few are genuinely outraged and want change. But I also see a lot of the same wishy-washy hairsplitting -- exactly of the kind that has plagued and characterized inaction on the gun violence issue for decades in America. I see also that some crack insincere jokes and degrade the argument with feeble cynicism.

consume insurance, consume gasoline, consume washing machines, consume televisions, consume women/men, consume beer, consume information, consume guns, consume anything you want, consume nothing you need, but consume...!

The gun debate in America has gone beyond the discussion of guns. It's now a debate on morals and whether you have any.
