Tourists forced to write 'sorry' 500 times over India lockdown breach

Post by truffledog »

Ten foreigners who broke a coronavirus lockdown in an Indian town made famous by the Beatles, were forced to repent by writing "I am so sorry" -- 500 times, officials said Sunday.

he nationwide lockdown was imposed near the end of March, with residents permitted to leave their homes only for essential services such as buying groceries and medicine. The travellers -- from Israel, Mexico, Australia and Austria -- were caught taking a walk in Rishikesh, where the Beatles sought spirituality at an Ashram in 1968.Local police officer Vinod Sharma said they were each made to write "I did not follow the rules of lockdown so I am so sorry" 500 times.

More than 700 foreign tourists from the US, Australia, Mexico and Israel staying in the area had flouted the lockdown rules, Sharma said, adding the unusual punishment was handed out to teach them a lesson.

I'd have been tempted to write, "India stinks like a shit hole", 500 times instead. Imbeciles.

I was on a bus in India near the western crossing into Nepal way back. When the bus was pulling into the station loads of people saw me and started chasing the bus so a cop came out and battered them all away with a long wooden baton. It was weird.

Considering the above (hundreds of tourists who don't play by the rules), I think they got off lightly.
It's not ok for foreigners to think that they are above the law, when the locals are paying the huge cost of staying at home and being out of work. Poor workers in India are dying because of this lockdown, so I don't have much sympathy for foreigners who want to party on like nothing is happening. Of course, this does not go down well with local people.
:nono:
Yes, it's a bummer and your holiday is ruined, but suck it up and behave like adults. (Or it will end with sticks. The Indians don't fk around. :-o )
