A mug shot of Huang Ya Shan.
A Chinese man wanted for the sexual assault of a minor was arrested in Vietnam after local authorities put him in a centralized facility for Covid-19 quarantine.
Huang Ya Shan, 23, is wanted by police in Haifeng, a county under the administration of Shanwei City in China's Guangdong Province for the alleged rape of an underaged victim.
To avoid custody, Huang sneaked into Vietnam and hid himself at the home of relatives in Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Dong Nai provinces, both bordering Ho Chi Minh City.
Police in Dong Nai had first sent Huang to a centralized quarantine facility in accordance with Vietnamese protocols on pandemic prevention.
As he failed to provide proper identification, authorities soon discovered Huang to be a wanted Chinese fugitive.
The Ministry of Public Security officers arrested Huang on Thursday and will hand him over to their Chinese counterparts at a later date.
Between June and August, local public security forces and border guards had uncovered 21 cases involving 177 illegal Chinese immigrants, launching criminal investigations against 19 Vietnamese and several Chinese for smuggling them in.
