Tik Tok to be banned ( maybe) in the US
Re: Tik Tok to be banned ( maybe) in the US
"Bearing in mind I didn't interact with anything, I didn't 'like' anything, yet within two minutes I started seeing very inappropriate material which only got worse".
This is the one thing many people don't understand about sites like Facebook and TikTok. Every time you use it, you are interacting with it and telling it what videos or posts interest you, and which don't. You don't have to 'like' or interact with anything. All you have to do is stop scrolling for a few seconds.
It records which posts you just scroll straight past, and which you stop to look at. It records how long you look at each post, and when you decide to continue scrolling. The longer you look at a video or post, the more interest you must have in the topic of it. It's this which the algorithm uses to decide what to show you next. If you tend to stop to look at posts about cats, you clearly have an interest in cats, and you will see more cat videos. You don't have to do anything else, other than stop scrolling and look at cat posts. That's all. You've told it you like cats.
You don't have to like, comment, or interact with anything in any way. All you have to do is stop scrolling for a second or so. It's why people think sites like Facebook listen to you through the mic on your phone, because you tend to see videos which you've never searched for, never interacted with, and never 'liked', but for some reason, you do have an interest in what you're being shown. I'm not saying FB doesn't spy on you through your mic, who knows, but the most likely reason is that it records every micro-second of your useage of the site, and can learn a lot more about you this way than you could ever imagine.

I'm seriously and unironically far more worried about the United States having such access to my data than the Chinese, if only because my opinions generally don't intersect with Chinese concerns, while I'm sure my beliefs and ideas are viewed as "problematic" by US authorities; I suppose to that end I'd prefer neither having my data if I really have a choice (and I don't).
Facebook in Cambodia is king, so I'm sure the USKGB already has my time schedule down to when I shower in the morning on lock.

No, I don't. I'd rather not get into my citizenship, I just referenced it merely to make the pointphuketrichard wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2024 1:53 pm You hold permeant residency of Cambodian ( u say) so ur what, a dual citizen with US?
that I was not stopped at the airport then, not stopped now, and it seems to have no real pattern.
A wise once said something along the lines of "Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say".why would you worry about the US having ur data?

I think that is a good adage to keep in mind, don't you think?

For those not worried about some government getting all their personal data, they should be.
The new enhanced espionage law in mainland China as well as the requirement that all electronic device must report to the security bureau, espionage is defined by the investigators.
Chinese security bureaus exist around the world, as evidenced by 2 clandestinely found in the Netherlands (along with the beating and detention of one of it’s journalists), leading to the closing of it’s embassy branch in the west.
Shutting down bank accounts, deleting passports and driver’s licenses (all data found on cell phones) can pressure people into doing a government’s bidding.
Communists governments have no accountability. In western governments, the public media reports malfeasances.
Just my opinions, of course.
