Facebook fined for data breaches in Cambridge Analytica scandal
Firm fined £500k for lack of transparency and failing to protect users’ information

Wed 11 Jul 2018 00.01 BST

Facebook is to be fined £500,000, the maximum amount possible, for its part in the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the information commissioner has announced.

The fine is for two breaches of the Data Protection Act. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) concluded that Facebook failed to safeguard its users’ information and that it failed to be transparent about how that data was harvested by others.

“Facebook has failed to provide the kind of protections they are required to under the Data Protection Act,” said Elizabeth Denham, the information commissioner. “Fines and prosecutions punish the bad actors, but my real goal is to effect change and restore trust and confidence in our democratic system.”

In the first quarter of 2018, Facebook took £500,000 in revenue every five and a half minutes. Because of the timing of the breaches, the ICO said it was unable to levy the penalties introduced by the European General Data Protection (GDPR), which caps fines at the higher level of €20m (£17m) or 4% of global turnover – in Facebook’s case, $1.9bn (£1.4bn). The £500,000 cap was set by the Data Protection Act 1998.

Facebook: Users’s data offered to Netflix and Airbnb, documents show
Emails show Mark Zuckerberg signed off controversial policies and discussed ways to cash in on data
6 December 2018
Facebook offered companies, including Netflix and Airbnb, access to data about users’ friends that it did not make available to other apps, according to documents released by parliament.

The 223 pages released yesterday were internal communications from 2012 to 2015 between company leaders, including chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, shedding light on allegations that Facebook has engaged in anti-competitive behaviour.

The documents show that Facebook tracked growth of competitors and denied them access to key data. Zuckerberg agreed to senior executive Justin Osofsky’s request in 2013 to stop giving friends’ list access to Vine on the day that social media rival Twitter launched the video-sharing service. “We’ve prepared reactive PR,” Mr Osofsky wrote, to which Mr Zuckerberg replied: “Yup, go for it.”

The documents also raised questions about Facebook’s transparency. An exchange from 2015 shows Facebook leaders discussing how to begin collecting call logs from Android users’ smartphones without subjecting them to “scary” permissions screens.

In a summary of the 250-page cache, which includes internal emails involving Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg and other members of staff, Damian Collins MP, chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, highlighted a number of “key issues”.

He claimed the documents show Facebook chose to “whitelist” selected companies, allowing them to maintain “full access” to the data of a user’s Facebook friends even after the company announced changes in 2015 to end such access.

Facebook: Washington DC sues tech giant over Cambridge Analytica data use

DC attorney general alleged in lawsuit the company’s ‘misleading privacy settings’ allowed firm to harvest information

Alex Hern in London and agencies
Wed 19 Dec 2018 19.42 GMT
- Washington DC has sued Facebook for allowing the political consultancy Cambridge Analytica to gain access to the personal data of tens of millions of the site’s users without their permission.

“Facebook failed to protect the privacy of its users and deceived them about who had access to their data and how it was used,” the city’s attorney general, Karl Racine, said in a statement released on Wednesday.

“Facebook put users at risk of manipulation by allowing companies like Cambridge Analytica and other third-party applications to collect personal data without users’ permission.”

The Washington DC lawsuit comes as Facebook faces new reports that it shared its users’ data without their permission, giving the streaming giants Netflix and Spotify the ability to read and even delete users’ private messages. It also faces fresh claims that it targets users with location-based adverts even if they block the company from accessing GPS on their phones.

UPDATE:
Facebook to be fined $5bn for Cambridge Analytica privacy violations – reports
The $5bn fine would be the largest ever levied by the Federal Trade Commission against a technology company
Julia Carrie Wong
Fri 12 Jul 2019 23.12 BST
The Federal Trade Commission has reportedly voted to approve fining Facebook roughly $5bn to settle an investigation into the company’s privacy violations that was launched following the Cambridge Analytica revelations.

The Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, both citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter, reported Friday afternoon that the settlement was approved by a 3-2 vote that broke along party lines, with Republicans in favor and Democrats opposed. The justice department is expected make a final approval of the fine.
Facebook and the FTC declined to comment.

The scariest thing about all of this is that young people nowadays don't give a shit about privacy. We've now approached a time where young adults have never known a life without the internet, and most of them can't see what all the fuss is about when it comes to privacy and personal data.

I do a lot of work with young adults, and the issue of online privacy and personal data comes up from time to time, and their attitude is that it's an insignificant price to pay if it makes their life easier. They couldn't care less that Google not only tracks their every move via their phones, but keeps that data indefinitely, if it means they can occasionally use Google Maps to find a particular location they want to go. They couldn't care less that Facebook algorithms can tell them things about their character, personality, political leanings, sexuality and behaviors that they probably aren't even aware of themselves. That they carry around with them, at all times, a microphone, which can be switched on at any time by anyone whose app they've installed on their phone and given permission to do so (because the app doesn't work without that particular permission - even if it's a game or a shopping app which has no obvious reason to gain access to their microphone) - There is a lot of evidence that Facebook Messenger listens in to your private conversations via the microphone on your phone - look it up.

Most of us oldies take privacy and private data very seriously, but the younger generation have been conditioned not to give it a second thought.

As I tell them, in the 1930s, Germany, as most countries do, did a census on it's population. My country, the UK, does one every ten years. It's just a government questionnaire to find out basic information about it's citizens. How many people live in your house? How many people are working? What is their religion etc... All innocent stuff. Until someone like Hitler comes to power who just so happens to hate Jews and wants to kill them all. But how did he know who was Jewish and who wasn't? The people themselves had told him, via a seemingly innocent census, carried out at a time when nobody felt they had anything to fear.

The younger generation are being deliberately conditioned by big companies, and to some extent, their own governments, to be ignorant to the fact that information is power, which to me, is quite scary.

Totally agree with xandreu, that it's a generational thing, where young people have very little idea of what privacy means, because they think it's normal to SHARE your private life online where it can be used and abused by data companies. Everybody knows your business. :-o

Not to mention all those photos showing themselves and their friends really faceless at some rave party that will be on the internet forever. :director:

And also there is the internet big brother element which already exists in Cambodia, but will be closely monitored as more and more PRC citizens move into the country.
