These are all terrific suggestions, keep them coming please!
How about in Melbourne -- I assume there are some good neighborhoods for self-guided walking, considering that restaurants are supposed to be such a big deal there.

Re: Seeking Australian Expats' Advice on Australia
My only input is to be aware when walking. Sadly Australia is not the safe place to amble about after dark especially in the inner Perth suburbs.
Shit , when I am home I don't even walk in the outer suburbs after dark.
Sad

Re: Seeking Australian Expats' Advice on Australia
I'm not much of an outside-after-dark kinda guy anyway, but if there are little pockets of any of these cities where the coffee-and-pretty-building tableau is both unsung and not to be missed, I'd definitely want to know about it. My favorite travel writer waxed poetic about Hunter's Hill in Sydney, e.g., though there doesn't seem to be a commercial core to Hunter's Hill -- but you get the idea: Someplace where a more conventional tourist would see no point, but where that's the whole idea.

Crap...after dark. North Perth after 10 or so Subi...Nah, no sweat. Freo can be a problem late night but Perth ain't London Sydney or L.A.StroppyChops wrote:I honestly wouldn't be walking either suburb after dark these days. Nice during the day though. Walk from the city centre up to King's Park is also nice, and the Riverside walk past the bell tower is nice too.
Be smart , avoid Northbridge late, enjoy.
Or just go south to maggot creek.

In Perth, I think you'll like a walk along Hay Street Mall.

Melbourne I suggest going to Vic Market, The National Gallery of Victoria, and Crown Casino all in walking distance of each other.

Re: Seeking Australian Expats' Advice on Australia
I'm not very up to date, but the markets in Perth used to be good too.
There's the street market in Subiaco, and there used to be a market in Freo which was good for a wander around. Sometimes music and stuff going on.
There were some good food malls too, but I can't remember any one in particular. Jazz sessions in beer gardens also, if the weather's right. And last time I was in Perth we went on a wine cruise on the river which was pretty cool. Sorry, don't remember any names.
