Russia has recruited as many as 15,000 Nepalis to fight its war.

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

I was there during the earthquake and stayed on after. There was plenty of money to rebuild, but corruption on a national and local level restricted the effort.

A foreigner grassroots relief effort formed to provide food, shelter, and medicines saw its bank accounts frozen with the money held taken by the Nepalese government on the grounds it was the government's duty or role to manage the recovery.

One of the local government officials in Pokhara overseeing the relief a year or two later built himself a rather splendid new house.

Yes, a formidable fighting force

Had a Nepali mate in London, lovely fellow, worked about 690 hours a week to send a few pounds back to his family and drank whiskey and smoked hash the rest of the time

That was the late 2000's & the situation wasn't good there then with the civil war just a few years behind

I was there in 1996, just before the Maoist insurgency kicked in. Those people, especially the ones who live in the mountains, are tough as hell. Had good times there, still one of my favourite countries I've been to.

The issue seems more lack of protections for Gurkhas serving in the Russian military. There are no MOU, treaties, or anything from protecting them from being used like underpaid cattle, not bothering to send them back if they die, and then kicking them out after service time. Since it’s through the Russian paramilitary, even less protection. Whatever the say so of the Wagner group is what they are joining up under. Currently advertised as Russian citizenship after one year of service, with expectations of multiple years of citizenship.

It took until 1997 before Gurkhas who joined the British army after four years of service were allowed to settle in the UK. So who knows what Russian promises mean.

Gurkhas go through special training schools that turn them from ordinary Nepalese citizens into Gurkhas, specialized in warfare. Ordinary Nepalese who join the Russian army have no such training.

Used, abused and kicked to the curb. I think they've come to an agreement now.

But I thought the crack Russian army was winning the war? /shrugs

In any event, it is never wise to fill up a military force with foreigners who have no ties to the country they are "fighting for". Get too many of them, piss them off and...you are in for trouble. The only reason the Wagner incident ended was too many of the mercs had family in Russia that were threatened. These foreign fighters have no such baggage. Buyer beware.

Perhaps the current Russian New Model Army has invoked the ghosts of the Mamluk Sultanate for historical guidance. That old motley crew.
