RIP Mr ALI :hattip:
“Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on Brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights? No I’m not going 10,000 miles from home to help murder and burn another poor nation simply to continue the domination of white slave masters of the darker people the world over. This is the day when such evils must come to an end. I have been warned that to take such a stand would cost me millions of dollars. But I have said it once and I will say it again. The real enemy of my people is here. I will not disgrace my religion, my people or myself by becoming a tool to enslave those who are fighting for their own justice, freedom and equality. If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people they wouldn’t have to draft me, I’d join tomorrow. I have nothing to lose by standing up for my beliefs. So I’ll go to jail, so what? We’ve been in jail for 400 years.”

Aligning himself with the Nation of Islam, its leader Elijah Muhammad, and a narrative that labeled the white race as the perpetrator of genocide against African Americans made Ali a target of public condemnation. The NOI was widely viewed by whites and even some African Americans as a black separatist "hate religion" with a propensity toward violence; Ali had few qualms about using his influential voice to speak NOI doctrine.[19] In a press conference articulating his opposition to the Vietnam War, Ali stated, "my enemy is the white people, not the Vietcong".[19] In relation to integration, he said: "We who follow the teachings of Elijah Muhammad don't want to be forced to integrate. Integration is wrong. We don't want to live with the white man; that's all."[105] And in relation to inter-racial marriage: "No intelligent black man or black woman in his or her right black mind wants white boys and white girls coming to their homes to marry their black sons and daughters."[105] Indeed, Ali's religious beliefs at the time included the notion that the white man was "the devil" and that white people were not "righteous".

Adding to the atmosphere were the considerable pre-fight theatrics and name calling. Ali portrayed Frazier as a "dumb tool of the white establishment". "Frazier is too ugly to be champ," Ali said. "Frazier is too dumb to be champ." Ali also frequently called Frazier an Uncle Tom. Dave Wolf, who worked in Frazier's camp, recalled that, "Ali was saying 'the only people rooting for Joe Frazier are white people in suits, Alabama sheriffs, and members of the Ku Klux Klan. I'm fighting for the little man in the ghetto.' Joe was sitting there, smashing his fist into the palm of his hand, saying, 'What the fuck does he know about the ghetto?'"[34]

He was indeed brazen, but never disgusting. OT mien Kamph stop your xenophobia from crawling out of the La Brea Tar pits of history.

I'm sure The Champ would like to ne remembered for all his quotes but this one seems appropriate at this moment, "Terrorists are not following Islam. Killing people and blowing up people and dropping bombs in places and all this is not the way to spread the word of Islam. So people realize now that all Muslims are not terrorists. Muhammad Ali

So it's xenophobia to point out the awful things he said about white people and integration?

You chuck a tantrum when Trump says much less. At least attempt to be consistent.

For me watching the various news footage highlights the distinct lack of real characters around sport today.

The media grooming by their management companies of modern day "stars" to say the right things to keep the sponsorship deals sweet offer little insight into the individual's real persona. Watching Tiger Woods and Maria Sharapova's grovelling attempts at post scandal damage limitation by their Nike puppeteers sums it up for me. Give me a Seve Ballesteros any day of the week. Beckham has become a global modern day promotional icon by carefully engineered branding, not bad for a fairly average international footballer who could make a wall of wet paint seem interesting.

Sport is crying out for real characters who can offer more than a few shallow tweets. We need a few more Seve's and Ali's around to liven things up.

"So it's xenophobia to point out the awful things he said about white people and integration."

Many Black people, far less famous shared those beliefs because white people had historically and until the present inflicted unthinkable crimes upon them. The obvious difference is that MA was speaking personal values on a social level, not running for office like Trump where he is in a position to inflict not only segregation but exclusion upon persons he considers dangerous because of his narrow minded bigotry. Yes Blacks in America lost a lot of faith in integration after its main proponent, Martin Luther King, was killed by a white man. Since Trump has announced his candidacy membership in The.Ku Klux Klan has swollen.

He was a courageous and admirable man of uncompromising integrity.
He may be quoted as a racist, but what he said was certainly true about white people being the enemy of blacks at that time.
I witnessed it personally/

It's racist to point out someone literally saying they're against racial integration? How meaningless that word really is.

I don't care about the opinions of people who can't even apply their meaningless labels with consistency. Sad, sad individual.
