Ranking US presidents

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Ranking US presidents

Post by phuketrichard »

watching Biden speak at the DNC, i got to wondering
how did/does Biden rank as best to worst President

#14
with Lincoln #1
with ( we all know who) as last

In a 2024 Presidential Greatness Project Expert Survey, President Joe Biden was ranked the 14th best president while former president Donald Trump was last.
The ranking came from 154 historians and presidential experts. The survey was conducted from November 2023 to December 2023. Biden was in the top third along with Woodrow Wilson and Ronald Reagan. Trump was ranked at 45. Former President Barack Obama was ranked at seven.

The presidents’ successes and failures were taken into account when given ranks. Presidents were also given a rating from 0 to 100, 100 being the highest rating possible. Half of the presidents were given ratings of 50 or below. Trump was given a 10.92.

Experts responding to the survey who self-identified as conservatives rated Biden No. 30, while liberals put him 13th and moderates ranked him 20th. All three of those same groups ranked Trump, whose presidency was marked by his flouting of historical norms, in the bottom five.

On the survey's 0-100 scale of "overall greatness," a rating of 50 means a president was average, while zero means a president is considered a failure. Only the top three presidents — Abraham Lincoln at No. 1, followed by Franklin D. Roosevelt and then George Washington — scored above 90. The drop-off was sharp from there, with no one else above an 80 rating. Roughly half the presidents were rated below 50.

Trump's overall rating was 10.92, easily the worst showing, while Biden's 62.66 had him tied with John Adams. Some of Biden's appeal could be due to the person he followed in the Oval Office: Trump was seen as "by far the most polarizing of the ranked presidents, selected by 170 respondents," according to a summary of the survey.

I wouldn't rank Biden very highly, in my opinion he hasn't shown any major initiative or done anything breathtaking. That being said, I would obviously rank him higher than those before him who had done something breathtakingly bad or stupid.

The worst presidents are easy to pick though. Trump at the top, he's a divisive demagogue with ethics worse than a used car salesman, completely unfit for any kind of public office. Followed by Nixon, even more of a criminal but at least an ounce of patriotism, albeit often misguided.

I think it is pointless comparing modern-day presidents with those who served before 1900. It was a completely different world. Washington was a slave owner; beat that Donald!

Post WWII, you can perhaps make a comparison worth its name.

I'll add security risk to your criticisms of him. Even before he was stealing top-secret nuclear documents, refusing to return them when asked, and doing God knows what with them, he was frequently sharing classified intel with virtually anyone, as a way to show off.

Alright, of course that's a legitimate opinion. Out of curiosity if you don't mind, for you as a retired US expat living in Southeast Asia, what did Trump do while in office that was beneficial for you?

Here's a pat on the back list for himself:

https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/tr ... lishments/

He could also navigate stairs, talk without a teleprompter and not shit his pants whilst in public. He was insufferable though - the only joy for a non-US citizen was the daily "Covfefe" meltdowns, etc. But honestly his embarrassments as a Boris-esque buffoon pale into insignificance versus Biden who has been the worst President in my living memory; even worse than Dubbya & Trump. Ronald being the best.

Ranking any president within the last 20-50 years is difficult due to observer biases. Also the full implications of their actions and how they fit with other presidents can’t be analyzed until much much later.

Just an example, ask a typical Southerner in the 1860s of how he ranked Abraham Lincoln. That president destroyed their way of life, possibly was directly responsible for dividing their family, and causing their deaths.

Just my opinion, of course.

Not sure where you are getting that from, Trump is the former president who wears diapers and has often been reported by his aides as smelling like crap. He also wears lifts to make himself seem taller which causes him to lean forward and there are lots of photos of him being helped down stairs. Then again you think Ronald Reagan who clearly exhibited Alzheimer's during his second term was the best... :please:
