UK Prison Slang
Re: UK Prison Slang
Yank was never considered a derogatory word when I was growing up, but times change I don't really know how it's regarded now, it's over thirty years since I was in England.Ed Hammer wrote: Here Samouth this is an America song......a lot of people wished they never came at all....over sexed over payed and over her.

Re: UK Prison Slang
i call most of my american friends Yanks, i think its a more mild playful term when used by the english
the Aussys call english Poms, while i dont really find the word itself offensive, i know most Aussys that say it in a more derogatory way..

No one speaks English anymore, skins instead of fag paper , go watch the movies, instead of go up the pictures. crash out when they mean a kip you're wiped out , instead of knackered, uptight instead of have the needle.Jamie_Lambo wrote:youve been reading too much google mate....Ed Hammer wrote:in English prison it's called a shiv, you been watching too much yank tv.Jamie_Lambo wrote:a Shank - improvised weapon used for stabbing and slicing other inmates, sometimes made by wearing down the ends of things like toothbrushes and oftenly having razor blades tied/taped to them
People all over the UK use the word there is no right/wrong way to say it, yanks also use the word shiv + Shank also
English song about british knife crime
one of englands biggest street gangs is called the Brixton "GAS" gang (Guns and Shanks)
but i suppose this british film about british ganglife is called "Shiv"
if you want to get technical....
A "Shiv" means to slice... this can be done by taping/tying a razor blade, sharp piece of glass/metal to the end of an object
A "Shank" means to stab... by wearing down the end of an object, like a toothbrush, into a sharp pointed object, with tape wrapped around to give it a bit of a handle, sometimes end up looking like a screwdriver...or lamb "Shank"... you know the traditional British dish?
please i dont need educating about british slang...
To much American TV and listing to wannabe black British wanna be rappers.

Shank is a English word not american,
a Shank is the part of the leg between the knee and the ankle (why a Lamb shank is called a lamb shank)
the long shaft part of a tool between the tool end and the handle ie. like on a screwdriver (hense where the prison "shank" got its name)

Oh man I haver never used this word or called any American I know Yank. I should have tried with GM or other American at the party and see how many punches in the face I would get. Perhaps I should try with RichardJamie_Lambo wrote:i call most of my american friends Yanks, i think its a more mild playful term when used by the english

Re: UK Prison Slang
i think english people can get away with it (just) as brits & yanks always have playful digs at each other, im not sure how they would take it if a foreigner was to say itSamouth wrote:Oh man I haver never used this word or called any American I know Yank.
