Perth Streets 3.

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Nice pics, Andy.

Smartphones have improved dramatically in recent times offering outstanding images. As an example the Samsung Galaxy S20 captures with 108megapixels allowing you to pinch/crop as much as you like without loss of image quality.Add this to its 100X zoom capabilities, and with the doubling of its sensor size improving low light shots incredibly, it's fast approaching the point where smartphones are almost a good substitute for traditional cameras for many people in my opinion.

But although the specs of smartphone technology has improved vastly in recent times, it's is no different to any other form or the craft, I believe. It's the user's ability to compose a shot, understand light, have the intuition or skill to put one's self in the right position where a moment may happen, and experience that will garner great photos.

I often meet people who shoot the streets with smartphones and nothing else with their results far surpassing anything I can produce. However, smartphones don't give me the knobs, dials and clicks I enjoy so much (I'm tactile by nature), or the appreciation of a well crafted camera body, the sense of history when shooting with a camera, how a camera feels in the hands.....and on.

I'm not sure whether it was the great French photographer Cartier-bresson or some other clever chap who said "The best camera to have is the one you have in your hands at that moment."
good points :thumb:
i would never give up my cameras and replace them with a phone

no aperture controls, no shutter controls, no iso controls, no depth of field, no adjustable flash speed, no adjustable focal points, no interchangeable lenses and on and on

Can you shoot raw on any camera phone?

FYI
people keeping harping about megapixel, its the last important feature of a camera and anything above 18 is a waste, unless ur going to do extensive cropping or make huge prints. Its even less important in a phone camera and ur never going to even make a 11x14 print or larger, but only share the image on fb or forums

as to the phone kfh said has 108megapixels, fucking waste of $$$ and ur going to need so many memory cards cause each photo would take up much space
Could not agree with you more about the subject phuketrichard, and that of most of the controls you talk of, that aspect tends to come mostly secondary in that of the editing stage with smartphones, editors such as ToolWiz where there is a dedicated section of what you mention.
Also, its not appropriate nor convenient to carry a camera around on a normal basis, unless that day was set out for the period of photography, this is on the other hand were the convenience of the smartphone slips in and out of one’s pocket. But really, I am talking on a personal veiw, one reason is of me early hours of the mornings, some I know will say words toward me of stupidity, but I could not as safely take those photos of street art in the city. Also, I am negative at learning the camera, look it still lays in its box after all these years.

Also, it maybe my outlook is a little different too some, I look on art and its form also background more so than the practice of photography. I do enjoy so much what editing programs bring these days, and all I use are the basics that are free.

Finishing off on the subject of megapixels, something I don’t go by, has I found some of the simple, single lens 8-megapixel smartphone can offer a better clear photo. But megapixels seem to sell the smartphone with the people “who have”.

Ha, I wish. I met two women a few weeks ago who shoot the streets every Friday, so I spend three or four hours with them once a week in the mornings. The pic is of one of them, a Spanish woman, whose husband is a scientist/lecturer at the University of Western Australia. I do quite fancy her, but as I'm a man with a modicum of decorum, I'll have to lust from afar. She shoots manual with a Fuji. *swoon*

Quick test shot KFH with the old XE-1 and a 30 year old nikon manual focus lens. Looks like it has potential with my old lenses as well. Need to try it with a longer focal length to get closer, that was 20mm.

I picked up an all black first generation X-E1 in Bangkok last week for the equivalent of $130 which I'm going to use as a discreet little street beater with the small primes. Boiling hot here but off out to give it a test run along the beach this afternoon.
I am glad I read this about lenses, I was looking what mine maybe on the mp1, and with doing so, there are updates on the computer from Olympus.
