China says spread of Covid ‘impossible’ to track as infections soar in Beijing

The spread of Covid-19 in China is now “impossible” to track, the country’s health authorities have said, announcing they have stopped recording asymptomatic cases in their daily tallies.

The admission comes amid soaring presentations to hospitals and clinics as Covid-19 spreads rapidly through the population in the wake of the sudden removal of strict pandemic measures. Authorities have urged people not to seek emergency healthcare unless necessary, and announced the rollout of second boosters to elderly and vulnerable people.

The commission officially reported just 2,291 symptomatic cases across China on Tuesday, at odds with reports from residents and health services of rampant infections – particularly in the capital Beijing.

Vice-premier Sun Chunlan earlier said Beijing’s new infections were “rapidly growing”, according to state media.

Official state media outlet China Daily reported Beijing had seen a more than six-fold increase in presentations to hospitals in the last week, and 16 times more to fever clinics.

Li Ang, deputy director of Beijing Municipal Health Commission, told media that on 9 December there were 31,000 calls to emergency medical services, six times more than average.

Anecdotally, residents are describing many friends, families, and co-workers falling ill with Covid, with one telling the Guardian it had “ripped through” the city. Employees at businesses, schools and embassies have described huge numbers of colleagues being home sick with the virus, or caring for family members. James Zimmerman, a Beijing-based lawyer, said on Twitter that 90% of people from his Beijing office had Covid.

As reported by Dr. John Campbell, the WHO released a long statement by director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. It was in a media briefing on the 14th.

In a classic ass-covering segment (note the bold face), the WHO seems to be saying the lab leak theory is still a concern, despite pretty much ruling it out back in early 2021.

As we look to end this emergency, we still need to understand how it began.

We continue to call on China to share the data and conduct the studies that we have requested, to better understand the origins of this virus.

As I have said many times, all hypotheses remain on the table.

In the same video, Dr. Campbell reports on massive COVID spread in China. The new variant is BF.7, which is super infective and has a very high reproduction number of 10-18 << one person could infect more than 10 to 18 people. But it is Omicron with very mild symptoms.

I am surprised by the numbers he has quoted 1 in 800 with serious yellow card reports and the fact that other vaccines have been withdrawn with a far lower side effect ratio. It certainly requires urgent investigation into those numbers alone.

It is a pity that the chamber was almost completely empty for this "debate". Maybe Pfizer had arranged a freebie champagne and caviar party with 'goodie bags' for attendees! It wouldn't surprise me.

This from a company who have only successfully ever launched to market 2 products. The 2 types of mRNA vax. And only then because they were given emergency use authorisation.
Rishi our pm worked for a company in his banking days that had 500 million investment in the firm. Who knows what he and his Mrs has invested now.

There was a study in Hong Kong that found that 3 doses of Sinovac offered similar levels of protection as 2 doses of Pfizer.

This can be clearly seen in the way c19 is going through china like a dose of salts.

Lock everyone up try to minimize contact and at some point you have to let it rip(to quote the blonde baboon) maybe it's for the best that it's now a less dangerous strain. At least everyone there will have a chance to get their own immune systems updated now.
