China's COVID infections hit record as economic outlook darkens
By Bernard Orr and Martin Quin Pollard
[excerpt]
WIDESPREAD OUTBREAKS, LOCKDOWNS
Wednesday's 31,444 new local COVID-19 infections broke a record set on April 13, when the commercial hub of Shanghai was crippled by a city-wide lockdown of its 25 million residents that would last two months.

This time, however, big outbreaks are numerous and far-flung, with the biggest in the southern city of Guangzhou and southwestern Chongqing, although hundreds of new infections are reported daily in cities such as Chengdu, Jinan, Lanzhou and Xian.

Nomura estimates that more than a fifth of China's GDP is under lockdown, a share bigger than the British economy.

"Shanghai-style full lockdowns could be avoided, but they might be replaced by more frequent partial lockdowns in a rising number of cities due to surging COVID case numbers," its analysts wrote.

While official case tallies are low by global standards, China tries to stamp out every infection chain, a tougher challenge as China faces its first winter battling the highly contagious Omicron variant.

China recently began loosening some norms on mass tests and quarantine, as it looks to avoid catch-all measures such as city-wide lockdowns.

Instead, cities have been using more localised and often unannounced lockdowns. Many people in Beijing said they recently received notices about three-day lockdowns of their housing compounds.

The far northeastern city of Harbin announced lockdowns of some areas on Thursday.

Many cities have returned to mass testing, which China had hoped to cut back as costs rise. Others, including Beijing, Shanghai and the Hainan island resort city of Sanya, have limited movements of recent arrivals.

The central city of Zhengzhou, where workers at the massive Foxconn (2317.TW) factory that makes iPhones for Apple Inc (AAPL.O) staged protests, announced five days of mass testing in eight districts, becoming the latest to revive daily tests for millions of residents.

Very interesting video presentation by Dr. John Campbell lays out new reporting from the Telegraph and others:

HEADLINE: UK scientists covered up Covid lab leak theory despite evidence for it

Telegraph has a paywall, but here is link to TVP report: https://tvpworld.com/64707406/uk-scient ... nce-for-it

A trove of emails countering scientists' support of the natural emergence of SARS-COV19 were never published -- until now.

The counter-arguments by scientists in varying degrees of support for the lab leak theory were aimed at two separate letters signed by dozens of scientists, published in The Lancet (Feb. 2020) and Nature (March 2020).

A Freedom of Information request by writer James Tobias yielded the many suppressed emails discussing the two published letters. Below are two summaries

From the Lancet, a large group of scientists dismissed the lab leak theory and buried it under the catch-all "conspiracy theories":
We are public health scientists who have closely followed the emergence of 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19)

and are deeply concerned about its impact on global health and wellbeing.

We stand together to strongly condemn conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin.
Similarly a month later in Nature:
Our analyses clearly show that SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus.

Conclusion

Obtaining related viral sequences from animal sources would be the most definitive way of revealing viral origins.

(Fully formed or evolutionary intermediate)

After more than two years of BS from the WHO, health authorities, pharma firms and so-called scientists who won't dare risk their careers/university tenures and fears of being cancelled, I don't trust a thing they say. It will take a generation or two for them to clean up their act, if that's at all possible. I think it may not be possible at all. Forever.

What's the difference between a covid conspiracy theory and a fact?

I don't even see how the lab leak is a conspiracy theory - COVID19 broke out just down the road from a laboratory experimenting on coronaviruses - what are the chances?

The only part of the lab leak conspiracy theory that could still be out there is "how/why" it was leaked. Just abysmal H&S standards at the lab, or something more sinister.
